Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I’m not sure I was paying attention if I was surprised he got 150m

seems like a reasonable and fair deal to me. It's 2 more years than you'd like but he annual value isn't crazy.

You are never going to get great value in FA, but I think this is a solid deal. Surprised the Mets didn't top that. Very happy he's not in the NL East for the next couple of years at least.

Age is a factor but $25M a year is solid for Springer.

Springer was never going to be an Atlanta Brave but the dominos are officially falling and it's time for AA to strike.

I still think AA can afford to be patient. The Blue Jays were always one of the teams who were going to spend. Seems pretty clear very few other teams are. So there will be bargains to be had.

Angels signed Quintana. Trying to understand who are the remaining suitors for Bauer at this point

Pretty amazing how quickly they got smart just by hiring Minasian.

They've still got ~ $25 million left (assuming they stay below the luxury tax line) after the Quintana signing. They could realistically add another arm from the Paxton/Hamels/Happ/Walker/Richards/Archer/Hill crowd, Pederson, and another pen arm with that money and they would have had themselves a really nice winter.

Lot of writers on Twitter talking about Toronto trading either Teoscar Hernandez or Lourdes Gurriel for pitching. Anyone interested?

Per Klaw in his Springer write up:
Hernández is wildly talented, but still struck out in 30.4 percent of his PA last year, and his .348 BABIP was a career high. He’s still extremely vulnerable to breaking stuff and he’s just going to see more of it going forward. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also had a career year in 2020, some of which looks sustainable (he boosted his walk rate and cut his strikeout rate) while some doesn’t (the .351 BABIP is the highest he’s posted at any level in pro ball).

Sounds like what I'd expect from Drew Waters (lots of talent, high K rate). But TH has put up a 900 OPS in MLB and Waters has a handful of at bats above AA.

Contract is 1/$8. I wonder if I'd rather have that than Smyly for 1/$11.

No thank you.

No idea which metrics are the ones AA looks at when picking his targets, but he's likely got solid reasons for jumping out there to get Smyly instead of picking through the rest of the guys left out there.

Call it blind loyalty if you'd like, but he hasn't missed on any significant signings that stayed healthy yet.

Angels need to start making hay with Trout entering the back of his prime. Astros are going to be in rebuild mode very soon.

I'd probably be interested in either, but the ask is likely to be more than I'd be willing to pay.

Dodgers monitoring the Bauer market, per Passan. If they get him, sheesh.

I saw that. They'd like him on a short-term, high AAV deal and he apparently is very interested in LA. My guess is the Angels go high AAV for four to five years but man, the Dodgers would be loaded.
