Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Somehow, I doubt it, but man...

Acuna
Albies
FF
Ozuna
Ramirez
TDA
Swanson
Pache

Really heavy RH, but still

Pretty hard to imagine Ozzie in the #2 hole if Ramirez was acquired - he'd likely move down to help balance the lineup...

Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, Ramirez, d'Arnaud, Ozzie, Swanson, Pache/Ender

That's better. We wasting out time dreaming though haha

You’d have to add an arm as well.

Wright would be too much for me to swallow but a Muller or Wilson would be easy to take if they interested Cleveland.

Exactly, but I would get behind a Waters, Wright, Riley for Ramirez. I prefer Wilson but I would prefer Cleveland just send him over for spare parts.

A RHR signed by Braves

The Braves have reached a minor league agreement with right-handed reliever Chasen Bradford, Jeff Passan of ESPN tweets. Bradford has appeared in a total of three major league seasons between the Mets and Mariners, logging a 3.89 ERA with a below-average strikeout rate (17.2 percent) and a solid walk rate (7.0 percent) across 104 innings. Along with limiting walks, the 31-year-old has induced grounders at an impressive 50.3 percent clip, which has helped him keep opposing offenses off the board. But Bradford underwent Tommy John surgery during the 2019 campaign and hasn’t pitched in the bigs since June of that season.

One of the things you have to love about AA - will leave no stone unturned when it comes to having plenty of veteran RP reclamation projects available. Edwards, Jones, Arano, Bradford.

Can't continuously have guys like that helping the big club (for peanuts) out of nowhere if you don't keep them around - wouldn't be surprised to see him pick up a couple more as teams make cuts. Actually a little surprised he hasn't kicked the tires on Roberto Osuna - guessing he still wants someone to pay him AND commit to him as their Closer even though it's St. Patricks Day and he doesn't have a job.

FG breakdown of what teams are paying FAs per WAR: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/what-did-teams-pay-per-win-in-free-agency/

That value based on all future guaranteed money is all the way down to $5.87M.

Just looking at new money given out this offseason, teams paid $4.81M in new money per win in 2021. Good news for players is the new money paid for 2022-2024 appears to bounce back the the $7M mark we've come to expect.

The bit about paying extra per WAR above 3 is also very interesting, and I tend to agree that average players aren't as valuable as star players on a dollar per WAR basis. A single guy posting 4 WAR is far more valuable than 2 guys posting 2 WAR due to finite playing time, but only if the overall roster is filled with MLB-caliber players. So the cheapest way to go from bad to decent is to buy a bunch of 2 win guys to fill out the roster, but at some point a team has to pony up for star talent (or develop it themselves) to consolidate wins into fewer roster spots.
