I'll just share an anecdote about this. Back when I was in California (the gold old days) one son spent a week in camping in Yosemite with his classmates and another spent a week panning for gold in the Sierra Nevada. Those were fabulous experiences for them. They went to public schools, but I'm pretty sure not all schools in California provide similar opportunities. You have to game the system a little to get assigned a good spot to camp. There is a portal for filing applications. And because the best slots go fast schools who are serious about this have someone refreshing the portal at midnight on the day it opens up. It is like getting tickets to a rock concert. A little outreach to schools (who might be heavily minority) who get locked out of these opportunities because of simple lack of knowledge or interest or exposure to camping culture can open up these opportunities to a whole group of kids.
