Gun Violence

ok

i guess they could do these things to make sure gun problems and our insane fetish for guns gets worse

but they are things they could do to expand gun "rights" i guess

My point is not that we should have all of these things, it's that everything I listed is obviously an infringement. If we interpreted the 2A as broadly as we do the rest of the BoR, none of those infringements would have been allowed and the Amendment would have been updated decades ago, as it needs to be.

I'm always amazed at all of the people who want to talk about how machine guns and RPGs didn't exist when the BoR was written so we need to creatively interpret restraints into the 2A. None of those people seem to apply the same standard to radio, television, blog sites, etc and how they compare to manual printing presses.

We have an entire regulatory apparatus for television (administered by the FCC). Rules on ownership (a company can't own a TV station and newspaper in the same city for example) that strike me as at odds with a purist interpretation of constitutional provisions for freedom of the press.

That's a fair point. I guess we regulate corporate weapons of mass dissemination. The abilities of individuals like Jim Jones or Charles Manson or Donald Trump to reach hundreds of millions via blogs, social media, message boards, YouTube is essentially unlimited. Unless the tech company doesn't like their politics. I submit that giving Joy Reid the ability to impart her stupidity to millions is more detrimental to public welfare than giving Billy Bob the hog hunter access to a machine gun.

The rules on station ownership apply to individuals as well. There are quite a few TV stations around the country owned by one person or closely held by a family. Ditto for radio. I'm not a purist or textualist or originalist when it comes to constitutional interpretation, but if I were I would say that's a violation of the first amendment's provisions regarding freedom of the press.

I doubt many stations are owned by a true individual unless they get really poor tax and estate conservation advice.

You may be familiar with the Cox Media Group. Among others they own WSB in Atlanta. Until recently. They sold off their stations a couple years ago. Until then the Cox family owned these stations, with most of the ownership shares belonging to two elderly sisters. The Graham and Hubbard families own a portfolio of stations. There are stations in some fairly large markets owned by one person. There is one in Jacksonville that I have some personal knowledge about that is owned by a single proprietor LLC.

Even a single member LLC is a business entity despite it being pass through for tax purposes.

Ignoring your cheekiness here I’m just wondering why you would have implied that any radio station would be owned by an individual

I think of my business as being owned by me. It is a single proprietor LLC. Who else owns it.

From a legal perspective you own the membership interests in the llc which owns the assets and incurrs the liabilities. So the business owns whatever you have.

I am with ya on guns but doesnt that work both ways. Gun nuts love the cops but say we need guns incase the cops are bad?

who is advocating confiscating guns ?

I would love to see the names, quotes and bills introduced to ...
////
am I wrong? Is threat of confiscating of guns nothing more than the threat of Antifa ? Shirai law ?
Domino theory?
