Braves sign Freeman to 8 year 135M deal! *Updated to 135m*

Excellent deal. The 20 million or so he will get per year in his free agency years is about what the market value would be for him right now. The market value would likely be quite a bit more once he were to become a free agent. Overall we get Freeman for 5 additional years covering all of his prime. It's about the best one could expect when extending Freeman.

This is great news in an otherwise very disappointing offseason. Kudos to Frank Wren for getting this done!

Yeah and I think they're related. We decided to lay off the multi year deals with other team's players and FA's to concentrate on our own. Payroll is limited and not a lot of extra money to spend, even 2-3 years out. Should lock up Simmons too, what's the risk? Simba and Freddie are pretty much sure bets to be good.

Now that I think about it the reports keep saying up to 8 years 125 million. I bet its 6 years with 2 team options years. Something like 20 million team option with a 5 million buyout. That would make the deal from 6 years 90 million to 8 years 125 million. 15 million a year average is pretty good when you still have 3 years of arbitration left where he might only make 20 million in those 3 years combined.

We now have the new face of the Braves. Hopefully Jason will join that picture soon enough.

And what a face it is!

Braves Country, it is now official!

Atlanta Braves ‏@Braves 1m

The Braves have agreed to terms with @FreddieFreeman5 on an eight-year contract. The contract runs through the 2021 season.

Mark Bowman ‏@mlbbowman 42s

Freddie Freeman and the Braves have agreed to an eight-year, $135 million contract.

8 years, 135 million.

Holy japozzo, not saying its bad btw, love the deal.

MONEY!!!!!!!!

Very excited about this deal (and J-Hey's buying out the arb-years). Very productive day for the Braves. Good moves.

I'm hopin this is a dominoe effect. Maybe Simmons and Heyward will see this as a sign of things to come and the new stadium as well. All positive signs going forward.

Let's assume Freeman had won his arb hearing had it come to that. He then would have been awarded a salary of $5.75MM. On the normal, 40-60-80 scale to determine future arb raises, he would have received salaries somewhere in the neighborhood of $8.75MM in 2015 and $11.75MM in 2016. That would come to $26.25MM for his remaining 3 years of arbitration. Now that we know he is getting $135MM for 8 years, his average yearly salary for the 5 free agent years we just bought would come to $21.75MM.

Had the Braves won the hearing and Freeman been awarded $4.5MM, his 3 arb years would have gotten him around $21MM and the 5 free agent years AVV would be $22.8MM.

While I agree that locking up Freeman was a good move for the club, it does not appear that the contract is a particularly team friendly one considering he still had 3 years left until FA. I would say that it is a fair deal, but not a team friendly one.

I must say I'm shocked at the money the Braves spent today. It is a good sign however, there is no doubt that Freddie Freeman is the face the Braves franchise now and all things considered when you consider his value when he would have hit the free agent market, the Braves are getting off pretty good. Didn't think I'd see them spend this kind of money but glad to see it. Now we now where some of their extra 25 million bucks went.

Meh, nothing really changed with Heyward.

He was under control for 2 more years, nothing changed that today.

Glad they signed Freeman to a long-term deal though.

Hope they can sign one or both of Simmons/Heyward to extensions.

Certainly not team-friendly, per say.

But you gotta realize money today is crazy.

15 million around 4 years ago is about 20 million right now.

Also, Kershaw got 30 million per year, as a pitcher, thats nearly 1 million per start, that is insane.

Howard got 5/125 at ages 32 through 37.

Tex got 8/180 at ages 29 through 36-37.

Freeman would of probably got that on the open market.

Indeed, as MLBTR's Steve Adams notes on Twitter, the Braves seem to have paid a major price for the five free agent years covered by the new contract. Even making the aggressive assumption that Freeman would earn $30MM over his arbitration period -- quite unlikely, since he stood to make less than $6MM this year already -- then the contract pays him a $21MM AAV for his free agent years. That seems like a steep price given that the cash will be promised three years before Freeman could have hit the open market.

As I stated, I'm happy that Freddie will be a Brave for a long time, but my enthusiasm is somewhat diminished by how much we had to pay to do it. We are essentially paying a premium, best case scenario price to Freeman for 8 years. We have now assumed all the risk, and a huge risk at that. We can only hope he continues to be a force like he was last year for several years to come. One thing is for sure, the Braves have made a huge, franchise altering decision here that will greatly affect this team for many years.

When he hits free agency, guys of his caliber could be getting 25+ a year.

Freeman will be worth it. I am just glad it got done now. Next year it might have taken 200 million to get him locked up. Its a lot of money but the majority of it will come after Uggla and BJ are gone. If we can win 96 games paying Uggla/BJ nearly 30 million a year then we will be fine paying Freeman 20 million a year so long as Wren can avoid signing players to big contracts right before their performance drops off a cliff.

You may well be right, but Freddie is 3 years away from FA, yet we are giving him on average $22MM to $23MM in his FA years, close what he might command in 3 years. That is essentially no discount at all, which is the main reason a team locks someone up years away from FA.

While Wren usually does a good job of getting good value in trades, his long term contract history is one where he always seem to pay the highest price. Seems we should have been able to get this done for something closer to $120MM than $135MM.

If we can just get out of this media deal......
