GDT 5/2/21: Braves @ Jays - Contreras takes over

3 bold predictions for the week...
1. Braves win both series
2. Ozuna hits over .400
3. Smyly gets a quality start

About the only piece that might be in demand is Morton and I wonder if he has a no-trade or limited-trade clause.

Sure.

But, as you probably already realized, I was just aping the general doom-&-gloom amongst the board right now. Personally, I still have faith the Braves will right the ship, and we'll be talking about acquisition, not trading major-league assets, come July.

We have had the worst luck we could’ve imagined so far. It’ll only get better from here (hopefully).

Perhaps he's talking NL and you're talking MLB?

Yes NL, and now they have moved all the way to 7th in the NL, almost exactly middle of the pack. The offense is still fine.

It would be fairly pointless to compare offensive stats of NL teams to AL teams who don’t have to bat the pitcher.

I'm not really worried about the offense at all... but I'm really concerned about our pen and starters... just seems like no one wants to step up and seize the positions... I have real questions and worries about our pitching talent evaluators and development

I think we should absolutely be worried about the offense. Contreas/Mathis, pache, and pitcher could make the braves the weakest bottom 3rd in the NL. Also until ozuna shows some life, not sure we can actually count on him being a dependable piece

There are a few glimmers of hope...

1. Nobody in the NL East ran off to a 17-11 start to the season.
2. The offense is scoring plenty of runs, and is projected to be better.
3. Fried is coming back, which is a pretty big step in fixing the rotation problem.

This team is a good week away from being back in first. If they can figure things out before the Mets and/or Nats do, they will be fine. At the deadline AA needs to shop for an OFer, some RHP for the BP, and possibly another reliable SP.

I guess the good (or maybe bad?) thing about the NL East is that the division is pretty strong from top to bottom, so which each team playing each other 19 times, they will keep beating up on each other and not allow for much separation.

This gives the Braves an opportunity to handle their business, but at the same time creates a situation where the two wild card teams will likely not come from the NL East.

eh... pretty much all the expected offense metrics show that the offense will be fine in the long run... Ozuna will be fine...

Contreras may be a better hitter than TdA. I'm not happy about the injury, but I think we'll be okay there.

Where we're not okay without personnel adjustment is our ****ty bullpen. We've got to start winning a few games late/extra innings, and this bullpen is not a lot better than it has been. Just because you bring up guys to give you an 11 man bullpen doesn't solve your bullpen problem. You just have a ****ty 11 man bullpen.

Well yeah, ozuna is the least of my worries in the group of him, pache, and contreas/Mathis. The advanced stats like pache and contreas/Mathis?

Most lineups have one or two guys with average to below average production. The rest of the lineup is so explosive, it easily makes up for that weakness. We don't know what we have in Contreras... we do know that d'Arnaud was not likely to come anywhere close to producing like he did last year... Contreras could easily come close to matching d'Arnaud's usual production. Pache can only get better.

I hope you're right. It's been A ball though since contreas put up a .700 ops. He hasn't been to AAA yet. He has been at the alt site though, and he's had success in very limited mlb experience so maybe

He laid down an absolutely perfect bunt for a base hit in the last game, and almost had another one the day before. I'd love to see him do that more often
