Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

Burnett signs with the Phillies.

... and it's $16MM for one year.

WTF Ruben Amaro. It must suck to be a legitimate Phillies fan.

Don't see how this is a bad signing.....yeah Philly needs some hitting but Burnett is a 200 innings guy, 2.9 FIP, 4 WAR and if you go by value he was worth 19.9 mil last year.

Isn't PNC pretty pitcher friendly? He was extremely mediocre from 2009-2011 for the Yankees. He's also 37 and was considering retiring, so the fire is flickering.

At any rate, Burnett is a nice compliment to any staff if he pitches at 2012/2013 levels, and I would've preferred him to Gavin Floyd, but the notion of him actually being worth $16MM is kind of funny ... the market this offseason has been unpredictable.

Jeter retiring after the 2014 season.

ESPN is going to be all over this -- all season long.

ESPN will literally be unwatchable.

Jeter will need a strong season, stronger than any season he's posted since 2009, to crack the top 5 SS in fWAR. More attainable though is scoring enough runs to crack top 3 offensively. Arky Vaughn's 4000 less PA are at risk.

Yeah it really has been unpredictable. But mostly overpays, like this one. The Maholm deal was an outlier, 1.5 mill.

Burnett projects as a 3 win player. 16M is about right if not slightly cheap. The going rate for starting pitching this off-season has been at 6M per win.

Top 15 in Swinging Strike % last season.

There were only 3 Ps to finish in the Top 10 in both K/9 and GB%...King Felix, Strasburg, and yes...A. J. Burnett. Burnett - 9.9/56.5%, King Felix - 9.5/51.4%, Strasburg - 9.4/51.5%. Pretty impressive company.

I don't view wins as a particularly useful metric to judge this contract. There are other factors which need strong consideration; Burnett's age, desire to play, overall condition of the remainder of the market. Matt Garza just got $12.5MM per year, Bronson Arroyo $9.5MM. And then there's still the availability of Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez (stand-outs, among other quite serviceable options). The pitching market caters much more to the teams now than it did a month ago.

It seems odd that Amaro's willingness to pay a premium on a one-year deal to Burnett, a guy who basically wants to retire and only accepted an offer he would've been foolish to turn down, is viewed favorably. Traditionally, these type of pacts (old guy, can pitch, but towards the end - like Hudson, Pettitte, even Kuroda ...) tend to feature team friendly terms. I would imagine most other offers for Burnett actually came in lower, but when Philadelphia learned that Hamels might miss the first month of the season they stepped their game up significantly. Because, honestly, who the hell would want to spend their last MLB season pitching for the 2014 Phillies?

Regardless of the dollar figure, Burnett seems like an unnecessary luxury for the Phillies.

Boy this is not going to be a fun season at all, everytime you turn on the TV whether it is MLB Network, ESPN, Fox, whomever it is going to be Jeter, Jeter, Jeter!!! UGH, this entire season is gonna be nothing but a slurpfest for Jeter. Im all for paying homage for the all-time greats, and Jeter is one of them, but the publicity that this one is going to get and the following is going to be disgusting. Chipper and Mo got nothing on this one!

AND there will be a hole bunch of idiots advocating that Jeter belongs in the HOF before he even retires, and yet some of them couldn't even vote for Maddux as first ballot. STUPID PEOPLE

Will be really interesting to see what Ubaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana get. At this late in the game, considering that signing either one would require a draft pick, some team might get a pretty good deal.

I hope he does it. For all the attention the guy is afforded, Jeter is almost unbearably earnest and impossible not to respect.

I dont respect him. He only played for the Yankees. That makes his accomplishments worthless to me. He had the biggest sports market with no salary cap. Even the Knicks could win championships if there was no salary cap. The only way Jeter could be a Yankee and earn my respect is if he were to come out in favor of a salary cap because its good for the game.

Personally I don't care. He'll be overrated by those who overrate him and underrated by those who hate the media coverage. Some people will think he's inner circle HOF some think he doesn't belong. Truth is that he's inbetween. Since 1990 he's one of the 10 best players in baseball, behind Barroids, A-Roid, Pooholes, Chipper, Bagwell, and Griffey. Though he could easily pass Griffey in totals.

The Burnett deal is fair.

He had a very good year, and was 2nd or 3rd in the NL in K's.

Durable.

Not a long-term committment, so for that much, i dont see the big deal.

A front 3 of Lee, Hamels, and Burnett is pretty nice, along with Gonzalez.

Though pitching has never been their problem lately.

But a luxury they can afford, especially for one year. Teams with a $180M payroll play a totally different game than the Braves.

A very likely scenario is that the Phils are out of the playoff race by the trade deadline and have the best starting pitcher available to trade. They could essentially turn $10M (the portion they paid him before being traded) into a nice prospect from a contending team. Imagine what they could get for AJ from a cash-strapped contender if they also agree to pay the rest of his salary for the year.

Rebuilding teams with a large payroll should do more of this, in my opinion. Sign very good veterans to 1 year deals and use them as trade chips at the deadline to infuse more talent into the system.
