2021 MLB Draft

FG latest mock:

24. Atlanta Braves
Pick: Trey Sweeney, SS Eastern Illinois

The Braves have been attached to plenty of high school outfielders and a few college arms (especially Cusick), but also have a history of taking college middle infielders who check the statistical boxes per their model. Trey Sweeney does just that, with power, walks, and plenty of contact, although evaluators are mixed on his swing mechanics.

Kinda figures - Sweeney ranks 58th on the FG list.

Sounds almost like Shewmake Part Deux except that Sweeney likely can't stay at SS at the pro level.

24. Atlanta Braves
Spencer Schwellenbach, SS/RHP, Nebraska

The Braves seem to have had Schwellebach circled for a few weeks now. They may be trying to push the Cornhusker Swiss Army Knife to their pick in the second round, but we don’t think he lasts that long. The Braves get their guy here. Atlanta has also been looking long and hard at Will Taylor and Lonnie White.

Both Taylor and White (and Chandler while we're at it) are big-time football recruits--White to Penn State, Taylor to Clemson--and I wonder if we would spring with the cash early to land those guys. I really don't know what to expect. In 2019, the Braves saved up dollars by going below slot on a few guys in Rounds 1-10 to channel toward some well-above slot guys post-Round 10 (Grissom, Owens, Johnson, Backstrom, Morton, Ball). We could see the same thing again or we could see them go above slot early to land a couple of guys who may be a challenge to sign. Schwellenbach and Sweeney would be the guys one would think who would fit the first scenario. White and Taylor fit the second.

May be trying to get a combination of both with the 1st and 2nd round picks.

It's not an either/or, but it's my guess that you'd have to go well below slot in the first to take a flier on a risky signing in the second. You just can't save enough money doing it the other way unless you just punt a couple of picks in the first five rounds.

Interesting note in the FG mock that Mozzicato has worked out for the Padres TWICE. Seems like the cold weather arm with late helium the Braves might reach for - think Ian Anderson.

Point I was making is that Schwellenbach and Sweeney seem easy sign guys that should sign for slot or below if you take them in the 1st round. Then could possibly open us up to Taylor or White in round 2.

Either way, I hope we end up with White. The last time we had a Lonnie on the team, we made it to back to back WS appearances.

Kiley’s two-round mock on ESPN has us taking RHP Michael McGreevy in the first and LHP Ky Bush in the second. Pretty boring, but that seems like the MO for this scouting dept.

He also has us tied to Jacob Walsh, a LH power hitting 1B/corner high school OF, at a later pick.

I'm guessing Kiley doesn't really have much more insight than the rest of the normal crowd at this point. Any connections he'd have to try to squeeze a little inside info from are likely long gone by now. Dana Brown (in charge of amateur scouting) is an AA guy from way back (Toronto), and I'd bet you don't become one of those without being tight-lipped AND making sure those under you are too. He wasn't here at any point while Kiley was, so I wonder if they even know each other particularly well.

Law this morning:

I just haven’t heard any other name linked to Atlanta this strongly all spring. I could see them going for the Tyler Black/Connor Norby group of college hitters (maybe Trey Sweeney or Ethan Wilson), or taking a different college arm like Jordan Wicks or Michael McGreevy, who I will forever think is the guitarist for Pearl Jam.

You’re way overanalyzing this. Kiley is ESPN’s draft guy, and he did a two round mock with notes on what he’s hearing for every team in baseball. He gets that info from front offices with every team, scouts and agents. The fact that there are no hold overs from his time in Atlanta wouldn’t have anything to do with his Braves info, as he’s projecting and passing along info from every team in baseball. I’m not saying he’s 100% right and has our picks nailed - I highly doubt Brown, AA and company know exactly what they’re doing at this point — but it’s seems crazy to discount what one of the most credible draft guy says just because the people he worked with in Atlanta aren’t here anymore.

Ky Bush is a slippery prospect. He could slide down to the second round. That would certainly relieve the Braves chafing over the decision on who to draft. If that were the case, he'd probably bring pleasure to all parties. Of course, he might heat up and rise to the first round. If he were to shoot up that far, it would probably make a mess of the Braves' plans.

Not "overanalyzing" anything - simply pointing out that Kiley likely doesn't have any inside information anyone else doesn't.

Not accusing you of peddling that, but we've seen people mention that he might before. I realize you weren't saying that, but others have talked like they think he's still got "contacts".

Callis, Mayo, the BA guys, the FG guys, etc. are all hearing rumblings as well. and it wouldn't surprise me to find out they're all getting different info from the same sources and scouts by design - really seems like the kind of thing AA would plan out to keep everybody guessing,

Newest BA mock has Taylor to the Angels at #9 and Sweeney to the Twins (after us) at #26.

Law still stuck on Schwellenbach for us with mentions of Black, Norby, Wilson and Sweeney as possible hitters being considered and Wicks and McGreevy as possible pitchers. Sweeney goes several picks before ours in Law's latest.

Edit: Oops. I see I duplicated Island Braves' earlier post. My apologies.

He'll likely be gone because of the helium he's picked up over the past year with the showcases, but Indiana IF Colson Montgomery would be my pick if he's available.

Baseball america still has Gavin Williams as the pick but says late buzz about an underslot deal with Ky Bush or potentially taking (the other) Max Muncy.
