Around the League - 2021 Szn

Marlins reportedly talking to Marte about an extension. Interesting timing of since the trade deadline is approaching. Probably trying to drive up the price for a suitor.

Marte supposedly wants to stay in Miami. I'm still ticked the Braves didn't pick him up at the deadline last season. He would have solved issues for both 2020 and 2021.

Marlins have a really nice base of young pitching (even with Sanchez going on the shelf). They still need offense, but I agree that they don't appear to be run by total idiots any longer.

It sounds too convenient to me that extension talks are gaining traction now, with the Marlins falling further out it and the trade deadline less than a month away.

You don’t extend someone to trade them. Not unless you extend at some discount. But typically when you extend you are paying market rate which wouldn’t help his trade value.

Unless this extension is at a significant discount, why are they even looking to extend him. He's already 32 and next year he will play all season at age 33. Would be better suited trading him at the deadline and signing in the off season if anything.

He isn't extended yet. I'm saying I think they are leaking their interest in extending him in an effort to drive up his price for teams looking to trade for him. In basic terms, they are subtly telling other teams that his availability in a trade is now in question, so you'd better come quick with an offer and make it a good one.

Interesting thoughts about a couple of those guys it doesn't look like we have the pieces for. This is REALLY way out there fantasy league *hit, but hey - it's Tuesday afternoon at work.

Let's assume Ozuna's money is expunged from the books at some point before next season - I'm imagining AA has that money for the 2022 budget (and moving forward). It would be nice to daydream that Pache and filler nets you Marte (and a 72 hour window to hammer out the extension he wants) and Yimi Garcia as a rental for the pen. You actually wind up "breaking even" $$$ wise ($50 million) in the long run, and if you make it a 3 year deal you could feasibly move him to a corner (or DH) in a year or two when he loses a step and/or Harris or Franklin is ready. Pretty far-fetched, but with the huge OF in Miami Pache would be an awfully nice piece for them if he ever hits at all.

You could then pivot to Texas and see if Waters, Shewmake, and Wright or Wilson actually could net you Gallo and Kennedy. You've "fixed" the offense in theory, kept the vast majority of the young SP depth (a couple of whom get transitioned to the pen this winter - Touki/De La Cruz), and have put yourself in position to continue to contend next season with...

Acuna, Marte, Freeman, Ozzie, Riley, Gallo, Dansby, Catcher (while also moving Dansby further down in the order as an added benefit)

If you decide to replace Dansby with Arcia, you'd save several million to use on a left-handed DH/OF (assuming the DH is adopted). If they're seriously looking at one of the college SSs that presumably will move quicker and be ready to replace Arcia in a couple years he replaces Shewmake on the organizational depth chart and you can sign a more defensive-minded utility guy that is really slick at SS in the event you want to replace Arcia late in games in 2022 and 2023.

No way all (or probably even part) of that actually happens, but it's at least fun to think about.

Maybe other teams are looking to trade with us because we are the team run by total idiots.

Benintendi would have been a nice option on the really cheap.

Hell, Duvall would have been great to have right about now.

Yeah, pretty dumb move that we didn't bring back Duvie. Super cheap bench bat that mashes RHP and plays good OF defense.

I wasn't crazy about Benintendi, but would have gladly taken him over the options we ended up with.

Sorta hindsight... we ended up with ozuna. We didn't know ozuna would go crazy, pache would flop, and TDA would get hurt. If ozuna were here, there's really no place to play Duvall bc apparently we don't wanna play Acuna in cf

I have doubts that Swanson will be a Brave next year unless he suddenly catches fire. Gonna probably cost somewhere close to $10M.

I feel like this is inevitable.

Duvall was going to get $7M in arb. Riley was getting $600K. Same numbers offensively. I think if Duvall would have signed with Atlanta for what he did with Miami he would be here and Camargo would not have been resigned.

Duvall is not good against RHP. This season is an anomaly.

Riley and Duvall do not have the same numbers offensively.

Who cares about Duvall? I like him, and I guess he’d be fine to have over Almonte right now. But, he hasn’t been especially good offensively this year, he traditionally doesn’t hit RHP, and the Braves have zero issues hitting LHP. In fact, I believe the Braves have the number one offense against LHP this year (or close to it).

Duvall might be an upgrade over one of our bench players right now, but he wouldn’t move the needle much. No point in crying over letting him go.

Same number of hits, Duvall with 8 more HRs and 6 RBI in the short season. What do you see that I dont?

Oh, I don’t know, the 55 point difference in OPS favoring Riley? And that’s with Duvall on a recent hot streak where he gave the Braves the business.

I see where you are going. My initial response was in answer to those who think Duvall should have been resigned last winter.
