10th-rder Dylan Spain signs w/@Braves for $17.5K (pick 307 = $143.2K). Had pitched 3 yrs for Div II Hawaii-Hilo, just worked out this year, reportedly added velo. 6-6 and touched mid-90s in workouts. @MLBDraft #Braves #MLBDraft

Keeping the running +/- tally going, this would add $125,700 to put us up to a $512,600 to the plus side. Looks like we are going to be able to move enough money around to net both Sawver-Smith and Collilns.

Braves have always seemed to hit Illinois fairly hard. Trey Riley was the last high pick we spent on the state (#5/2018) out of John A. Logan JC. Hoffman pitched a Logan JC in 2020 before transferring to Illinois. Big kid who played in the draft league for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (0-0/2.35 ERA/5 G/7.2 IP/0.9 WHIP/13 K/2 BB).

Thanks rico43. I'm surprised Smith's bonus came in below the $125,000 cap for post-Round 10 selections. No savings there because the savings from signings below $125,000 for post-Round 10 players have no effect on the pool. Smith has only been pitching a couple of years and although he's one of our older picks in terms of age, it was rumored he might return to Arizona and roll the dice as a senior. Big-time fastball.

He probably took a look at the Braves' IL and figured, correctly, that there are pitching jobs for the taking. Also aware that seniors have little leverage and chances are that he'd have gotten less money.
 
Talking Chop lists 14th rounder Adam Durbin (SS, Washington, Mo.) as signed. No bonus figure cited.

That would make 10 of 20 picks signed so far. Deadline is August 1st.

It would have been a roll of the dice like our 3rd round pick Dodd. Of course, Dodd wasn't drafted last year so he didn't have that option. Not easy being a 5th year senior.

I'm especially curious about Durbin. The guy stuck out 10 times in just over 400 PAs spread over three years. Granted it's NCAA Division III, but it will be interesting to see if the contact skills are maintained to a similar--though certainly not exact--degree. There will likely be some erosion, but it will be something to watch.

Callis: 2nd-rder Spencer Schwellenbach signs w/@Braves for $1 mil (pick 59 value = $1,185,500). Nebraska RHP, mid-90s fastball, low-80s slider, mid-80s changeup w/power sink. Also SS w/high exit velos, had some 1st-rd buzz as pos player. John Olerud Award, Big Ten player of yr.

Haven't kept up too much, but those savings are for Shawver and Collins I would imagine...if one of those can't reach a deal, they would try to float it to Ty Evans? I think Brown said he was confident in 19 of the 20 getting signed.

I wondered about the same thing. The problem with that scenario is that if either Collins or Shawver-Smith (or both) don't sign, the Braves lose that money from the pool. The slot amounts for those picks total $367,700, which is covered by the current overage. Of course, we can't assume the signing amounts for Cusick, Conley, and Justyn-Henry, but I'm guessing there will be some savings there. Whether the resulting bottom line would be enough to pull Evans away from his Florida commitment would be the question.

Like you, I took Brown's comments to mean that Evans was the outlier and that they either had agreement in principle or were very close with the other 19 picks. For some reason, I think Anglin may require going above the $125,000 post-Round 10 value.

4th-rder Cal Conley signs w/@Braves for $422,500 (pick 126 value = $451,800). Texas Tech SS, batted .329/.393/.587 w/15 HR in lone full season, switch-hitter w/feel to hit & sneaky pop, solid speed, high baseball IQ. @MLBDraft

Ty Evans would be a great catch, but it's inevitable I think that he doesn't sign. I like this kind of pick if only because it's a position player who's profile still has upside and I love HS picks if only to get them acclimated sooner to pro ball. Collins definitely seems Mallex Smith-esque/Pache with a better hit tool to me. He's already called the Oklahoma State coaches who recruited him to say he'll sign. It'll be interesting to see what he gets.
