Wow! Comments from Mets GM, on his players lengthy recovery from injury this year:

But when asked why all these soft tissue injuries are occurring, Scott admitted that sometimes compliance by the player comes into play.

“Most of the time, I’ll be honest, it’s compliance issues,” he told reporters when asked what’s led to injuries.

“Actually following the plan because these are all individuals and control their own bodies. Sometimes they’re not as compliant as they should be. I’ve seen that happen in the past.”

The Mets are such a bad franchise, man. Talent alone just isn't enough. Their culture is flat-out trash

Everyone thought it would be different with bringing in the new owner. But his first mistake was bringing back Alderson. Should have cleaned house and brought in a new culture.

Just saw where Miguel Cabrera hit 499. I forgot he was still around. That is a terrible contract the Tigers agreed to. Looking at guys like he and Pujols makes you think hard about what we should do with Freddie if we would have to pay him into his late 30s.

We won’t. We won’t go over 4 years.

Chris Davis has retired. Been a bad player for a loooooong time, but he had some nice seasons in the early part of the last decade.

It's especially instructive because folks love to use the "Freeman is a good athlete who is less likely to decline than most guys playing 1B".

Well....

Pujols actually played 3B and LF for multiple seasons, won several gold gloves at 1B, and stole as many as 16 bases in a season. He was a very athletic guy at 1B, and still fell off a cliff in his mid 30s.

Cabrera also played 3B and and LF for multiple season. In fact, he played those positions for more years than Pujols did. He was pretty much done being an offensive force by age 34.

It appears to me we are currently witnessing Goldschmidt going through the exact same decline as he approaches his mid-30s, and he is also a gold glove caliber athlete over at 1B.

So all these "yeah but what about" comments for Freeman's likely aging curve is ignoring all evidence to the contrary. He is very likely to be a shell of his current peak 3-5 years from now, just like other formerly elite guys at 1B. Chances are he's no more athletic (or whatever other nebulous characteristic folks want to assign to him) than guys like Cabrera, Pujols and Goldy before him.

If Freeman is willing to sign some sort of 3ish year deal for $75M-$100M, I hope he's a Brave in 2022. If some team like the Angels or Cubs is looking to give him a contract into his late 30s, I expect AA to act responsibly and let him move on.

I'm so old, I remember when Cabrera first entered the majors for the Marlins and he was a fit-looking OF/3B. Great player, but I've never really liked him after he put an unnecessary hard tag on the Braves' Darren Bragg during a game that led to a partial bench-clearing brawl. And then he got super fat and basically forgot who to play any semblance of defense. He'll be in the HoF though.

The part you’re ignoring is that Freeman is actually a 3B.

Freeman isn’t even as athletic as Pujols was in his prime, and is nowhere near what Cabrera was. People forget that Cabrera was a freak athlete a la Acuña when he first came up (but without the elite speed). IIRC he came up as a SS, but moved to LF for his rookie season because the Marlins had Gonzalez and Lowell.

Actually looked at his old stats. Miggy wasn’t a great defender but his reputation was good. He did actually play third though.

One could tell Cabrera was going to hit from the get-go. He played SS and 3B almost exclusively in the minors but the Marlins wanted to get his bat into the line-up and OF it was.

I know the feeling. The first game I went to I saw a rookie pitcher named Tom Glavine.
