GDT 8/27/21: Giants @ Braves - #MyAce Coming for More Blood

Holy crap. Snit, Smith needs to be 6th-7th guy

No way. This is exactly why you keep Smith in there until he melts completely. He can stand the heat and has 29 saves. Now he's shouldering the majority of the bullpen stress. Once you start shuffling the roles your options decrease and stress levels go up exponentially.

This is an interesting point, even if it’s intangible. One could argue that playing matchups at the end of the game with no set closer doesn’t put anyone “on the spot” and therefore keeps stress levels low.

Not every reliever can deal with closing. How many others would've crumbled after giving up the leadoff HR? As much as fans expected him to not have a clean inning, we also had some faith that he could still save it. He's resilient...frustrating but resilient.

The last 2 seasons, the save % has to be great, but it's issued damage to our fanbase in the process. Those guys make things interesting

I've heard a lot of talk over the years about how making your best reliever the closer was bad and inefficient but the reality is that Matzek could put out 25 / 25 fires in the 7th or 8th and Smith could convert 22/25 saves and the only thing would take about is the shakiness of smith.

The Braves were 1 bad Twitner SP move away from playing 3 straight 1 run games against 2 legit playoff teams. They are by far the best squad in the NL East.

Would you trust Will Smith in the 9th inning of a playoff game? I wouldn’t. He’s 3rd in fWAR for lefty relievers on the team and gives up a lot of homers. He should only be facing lefties. Personally I’d feel much more comfortable with Rodriguez out there.

Have you seen his save percentage. That is all you need to know. He is cream of the crop. At least according to twit.
