GDT 10/11/21: Braves vs Brewers - NLDS Game 3

I like this. My personal rationale is either A.) Charlie looks good and we ride him or alternatively B.) he struggles, you have a quick hook before any major damage is incurred and your just right back to where you would have been if you went with a bullpen game.

In that case you have the upside of him being good, while your downside (so long as he doesn't get absolutely torched) is largely just burning him from a potential game 5. Then you do lose him for game 5 but we have Fried going who would start anyways and i don't think we should be managing to a "worst case" of "what if we lose game 4, Fried struggles and now we don't have Morton available in relief for game 5"

I'd feel different if our option in game 4 was either Morton or another very good starter, but to me we either start with a bullpen game or go to a bullpen game after 2 innings if Charlie isn't on - and in that case he ironically might still be available for a game 5
 
Not a fan of this. It sets up fine long term if we win. But it makes today close to a must win in my mind when the alternative is heading to Milwaukee to face Burnes/Woodruff on normal rest and Hader available when we'd only have Fried.
 
I am good with this. I can see Uncle Charlie going a few innings then maybe Yona/Drew. I would love to avoid Matzek, LJ and Smith if all possible, but if we have a chance to close it, they will pitch.

we could pull Morton after 1 inning and have him in game 5 after another day off. I have a feeling Morton is old enough to know his limitations and wouldn't take the ball if he thought he couldn't help his team.
 
The question is really not the next game...it is do we trust Morton on 3 days rest. We all would start a normal rest Morton today, but how much less effective do we expect him to be on 3 days rest.

I trust normal rest Morton over our bullpen any day. If he is ineffective, we go to a bullpen game early, but would snit go back to the original thought of Ynoa + Smiley or does he fall into the trap of 1 inning at a time by guys like Mayzek, Mintor, Jackson, Webb, etc since we may be behind at that point. It is much harder to go to Ynoa in the 3rd down by 3 than to go with Ynoa in the 1st in a 0-0 game.

The way I view it, it's our best option. If you push Morton back to game 5, you run the risk of only using Fried once, and he's been our best starter over the past month and a half.

I don't really think we'd want to mess around and use a bullpen game of Ynoa/Minter/Smyly, because while it could work, we may be left thinking would it be different if we used Morton.
 
Uggg... Morton could be an advantage here but there's not exactly a great track record of pitchers having alot of success on short rest.
 
So if this series goes 5, nlcs on regular rest would be

Anderson in g1 and g5.
Morton in g2 and g6.
Fried in g3 and g7.

Is that right?

"Going with Morton on short rest is really playing old-school. But I guess the idea is the Braves have Fried on full rest either way, so there's that.

I'll say this: If the Brewers can find the bats tonight, then having Burnes AND Woody fully rested puts them in pretty darn good shape, especially since ATL will only have one guy backed up by a bullpen that's been shaky without having been made to pay for it.

Starting Morton is a "we're scared of Game 5" move. Let's really give them reason to be worried."
 
Snitker better have a quick hook with Morton. Not only is he starting on short rest and will probably tire early, but these Brewers hitters are seeing him 4th time in 3 days.
