Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

It's 2 FA years.

Next year is his first year of arby i think.

You are right. He has had 2 years of service time and is not a super 2 player. He will (would) make league minimum or so this year and have 3 more years before going to FA. 6/55 seems like a really good deal for the Cards. If Carpenter plays anywhere close to what he did in 2013 he will be a super bargain.

Ollie Perez to the DBacks for 2 years.

Philly supposedly interested in Ervin Santana.

I guess getting people to call him Ollie and throwing together a not-terrible year made everyone (or at least the Diamondbacks) forget he is still actually Oliver Perez.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: Ervin Santana now seeking a one-year deal, and wants to sign as quickly as possible.

Sources add: Santana wants to sign with a strong offensive club. Both #BlueJays and #Orioles fit that description and have shown interest.

Santana unwilling to wait on 1-yr deal, even though he would be exempt from ’14 qualifying offer after Opening Day. Wants to be in camp now.

That's because Ervin Santana just isn't that good. He's had 2 good years out of 7 or 8 that he's been in the majors and 3 flat out horrible years.

What 3 years were flat out horrible? He has 3 seasons with a FIP over 5, and 2 of those were in a more offensive era. His only truly awful season was 2012.

Santana is a solid 2-3 WAR pitcher. I wouldn't give up a pick for him, but we could probably do a sign and trade with KC where we give them a few middling prospects.

So having a FIP over 5 in 3 different seasons doesn't qualify as having 3 seasons that were flat out horrible? Having only 2 years with a FIP under 4 makes him a solid pitcher?

Yes he is solid.

You have to remember that pre-2010 and post 2010 have different standards for pitching. Or maybe it was 2009.

Santana's fWAR by season were 1.7, 3.3, 1.1, 6.0, 1.1, 1.9, 2.6, -1.0, 3.0

His career ERA- is 100 which means he's exactly average, averages about 6.1 IP per start for his career as well. I'd call that solid. Being average and one of the better inning eaters.

I don't consider being a league average pitcher as "solid". We clearly have different definitions on that. To be solid as anyone who routinely carries around a FIP of 4 and below with the great ones being a 3.5 and below. But you are right about 2010 being the year where offense took a nosedive.

MLB average for runs scored and runs per game.
2013 - 675 (4.16)
2012 - 701 (4.32)
2011 - 694 (4.28)
2010 - 710 (4.38)
2009 - 747 (4.61)
2008 - 753 (4.64)
2007 - 777 (4.79)
2006 - 787 (4.85)
2005 - 744 (4.59)
2004 - 779 (4.80)

Santana is better than Tiger is saying, but not giving up a pick for him.

Braves need both.

Medicals on him are spooking some teams off . The words "ticking time bomb" were mentioned and that's never good.
