Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Losing a draft pick for Santana would not be devastating considering the pick for McCann. Money and years tho I imagine he would be tradeable at some time.
Wonder if Lackey is available. Sox still need an OFer. Dont seem to think Bradley Jr is ready.
Wonder if Samardzjia is out there? We have the prospects IMO.

Breaking down the box SUNDAY

Medlen: waiting to see. Heard that he threw one more pitch after shaking out elbow. That's just nuts on his part. Hope strain means muscle.

Vasquez: been hurt, making his first spring appearance. Was let down by defense (two errors) and the Mets ran wild on Lerud kid. Also for the second time this spring, Lamm only made a big inning worse.

Good to see good inning from Perez. Braves are hanging with him since he his lefty who throws it 95.

Lipka in game as PR, steals base. Telling you, Fredi is gonna fall in love with him and insist he come north.Won't happen, but I'm just saying ..

Pena 2-4, 2 2B, RBI. We've been looking in the wrong place all along. THIS GUY should be the starting second baseman (.364)

BJ 1-2, BB Yay.

Hamitlon 3-4, 2 2B, 2 R. They may actually cut Rojas and make this guy the Gwinnett 1B? Tell me I heard that wrong, please.

Greene 0-4, 3 K. Just a fallen star, minor league variety.

Actually shook his arm for the first time following pitch number 50. Threw 6 more pitches in relatively obvious discomfort and shook it a couple more times, then came out following pitch number 57. Didn't see any alarming velocity drop (one of the first signs they apparently look for - remember Beachy in 2012), and didn't toss a floater or spinner up there until the last pitch.

(Was watching closely during the replay on the MLB Network last night.)

Said to several people last night I think Wren's already circling back around to Samardzija with Theo and Jed - certainly won't include Heyward or J-Up since it would be a bit of a "win-now" move, but he'd likely make the most sense. Can't imagine they'd give up the pick for Santana (when the kid they get there could conceivably be a part of the team moving into the new park), and I don't think they'll give up significant pieces to get Lackey.

If they go after someone at this point, you have to figure it'd be someone they'd consider extending and making a part of the team that opens the new stadium - considering we're presently already down Minor and Medlen and Beachy hasn't been particularly impressive, I just can't see them "selling-out" for a short-term fix.

Assuming the worst case (Medlen out for the season), I'd be ok with a rotation of Minor, Beachy, Teheran, Wood and Floyd. With Garcia/Hale making some starts until Floyd gets back.

Our staff was pretty much assembled with the expectation that someone would go down. If Medlen is gone, it does remove our margin of safety. It does increase the probability that we will have to turn to someone like Thomas or Martin for a few starts. It also reduces our flexibility in terms of managing Wood's innings. However, at this point it does not require going out and overpaying for a Samardzija.

If I was Wren I would still keep my powder dry until June to see where the needs are most urgent. If there are additional issues with pitching beyond losing Medlen (say Beachy is ineffective and no in-house alternative emerges), then I would make a move for more starting pitching. But I would wait to see how things shake out. It could be that an injury at another position creates a bigger need. I don't see Wren overreacting and doing whatever it takes to get a pitcher before the season starts.

Fact is, other than E. Santana and $14M-or-so expected price (+ compensatory draft pick), pickings real slim for avail. starting pitching.

None of the other names bandied about are clear upgrades over #Braves in-house options if they must fill spot for month or 2 til Floyd ready.

#Braves Fredi G said no word yet on Medlen, seeing doc now or soon.

#Braves Fredi G: "Thank God we signed Fredi Garcia this winter."

Pretty much. I think the team rolls with whatever we have in house (regardless if Meds is out a month or the season) and look for something at the trade deadline.

Apparently the Braves made a move

Sox send RH Zach Stewart to Atlanta for cash considerations.

Wren has a good relationship with Dave Dombroski the Tigers GM call him about Rick Porcello.

If we can get most of his salary paid and not give much up (like Varvaro and another fringe arm/prospect) then yeah, but Porcello doesn't excite me. Full disclosure I loved him as a prospect, but that just hasn't translated to the majors. He's solid as a starter, may be able to replace Medlen's production (though I doubt it) Porcello is potentially under control in 2015 as he's arb 4, but I probably wouldn't bring him back.

I'm just hoping Meds is OK. Only small positive is odds are we'd be able to keep him in 2015 at the same price as he is today but this will be 2 TJs in 3 years.

Just saw that through the wire. I'm guessing more depth. He had a 4.25 ERA in AAA last year and has a career 6.82 ERA in the majors. I guess the one small potential positive is that he has a career 3.98 xFIP. His HR rate is insane though.

Lets stop complaining about people who don't paint the Braves with all roses (like I do). I don't agree with most of the concerned posts but it results in great discussion which is what this board is all about.

My easel contains nothing, but dark colors.

Porcellow had a solid increase in his K/9 while keeping his walks and GB rate the same. If he can further improve those numbers then he might be a good starter. Put him in the NL and he might surprise some people. I'd be very encouraged with that move honestly.
