Official CBA Negotiation Thread

I am not taking sides in this - well, yes I am- but I just want baseball back. But since I am taking sides, I am of the opinion that the players make an absurd amount of money already. If the owners want to break the union, then break em. And for good— so this never happens again.

And the owners make even more money...

Folks siding against rich players in favor of even richer owners is truly baffling.

It's weird to me that fans side with either. If one side gets more money, that money will end up being paid by fans in the form of tickets/concessions/tv packages/etc.

I'd rather they cut the cost of tickets, concessions, parking, etc. so I that the money is staying with me.

so that ain't happening unless you just don't go and isn't one of the options

well, unless you can convince the people that are making 10 billion dollars and shutting down a season to make 10.1 billion dollars (a made up number but you get the point) to make 9.9 billion dollars instead to pay their employees properly and help out the little people that help pay for all of it to happen

but this is america, so we know that ain't gonna happen

Well...that's capitalism everyone so blindly loves because it's "American" to love it unconditionally. Owners are going to charge as much as they can until fans stop paying. Candy bars, gas, mortgage rates, labor costs...all subject to the forces of capitalism.

The problem is, folks tend to only love capitalism when they benefit from it. Owners LOVE capitalism when it allows them to increase prices and generate more revenue, but they HATE capitalism when they have to pay market rate for labor. The same discussion is happening right now all over the labor market, from fast food workers to engineers to CEOs.

I know right, folks being completely hypocritical when it suits them should be no surprise to anyone.

Hey, if they can make more money, good for them. I'm too addicted to watching it now to back out no matter how much they stick me. People like me are the reason they can continue to fight over money, and then pass the tab to us.

ETA... when dish dropped the regional networks, I switched to directv and pay $50 more a month. Im a dummy. I could buy a lot more fried chicken, Cheetos, little Debby cakes, and natural light with that money

The problem is, the owners aren't going to accept less than current profit margins regardless of the labor situation. If their labor costs go up by $10 million, they're adding $10 million in after tax revenue from somewhere (as long as the fans will pay it, which so far we always have). No one is going to willingly accept less money, regardless of industry.

I'm not saying I like it. But that's the reality.

I am willing to accept less money and have done so in my life a bunch

makes things better across the board for everyone and done it for other benefits as well

greed fuels capitalism and ironically it's what is going to destroy it too

but as i've said, this is america. so, it ain't gonna happen

You are an outlier...like a less than 1% outlier...if that is the case.

I have no doubt that you accepted less money in the short term...I have as well...but you got some sort of benefit from doing so, intangible or otherwise.

Capitalism isn't going anywhere until a better system replaces it. For all its flaws, the other systems in place around the world are all far worse. Every system gets exploited by those who hold the power...capitalism, socialism, communism, whatever -ism you can find.

ftr

the benefits i'm talking about is increased/loyal customers that would continue to come back cause it's being passed on to them with good price and service etc thus a happy loyal and returning client/customer base. which in the end, everyone wins

and the other is taking less money so you have more free time to not actually be working cause being able to take time off and or go on vacations are more important than money imo

Couldn't agree more with all of that.

But you wouldn't do the same job, for the same hours, risking the same amount of capital, providing the same level of service and receiving the same intangible benefits, to take less money...willingly.

That's all I'm saying. If you ask a corporation or individual to accept less money while doing the same amount of work and providing the same level of service, they aren't going to comply. Something has to suffer...either the price will go up or their cost of goods sold will go down. I'm not making a moral judgment on it one way or the other...it's just a fact of life.

At some point you would think there has to be enough money for people to stop trying to make more, but history shows that to not be the case.

What kind of Mississippian are you?!?

Owners make more than the payroll and all other costs that go into a season?

Please tell you aren't basing the profitability owning a team on yearly cash flows?

You do realize the Braves were bought in 2007 for $400M and are now estimated to worth $1.8B (that's billion), right? You realize money making endeavors like The Battery only exist due to the ownership of the Braves, right?

The appreciation in value for these franchises and the ancillary benefits of owning a pro sports team is where the true profit lies.
