Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

I know you are poking fun but I believe that we do have depth to cover 3 starters for a month or so. I really believe that Ian Thomas will surprise some people and then you have Hale who could pitch for a month till Floyd is ready.

is Ian Thomas your new Gattis??

Medlen underwent his MRI exam early this afternoon. It's still not clear whether Braves docs will evaluate tonight or tomorrow morning

Per Bowman

But that is just one starter. Braves had depth behind that. But when you are starting at two starters being out probably from the start of the year and another iffy in Minor then thats a whole different ball game.

I'm just not sure that you can prepare for that the way you wanted the Braves to.

Three starters usually go down (or return late) just about every year for some (significant) amount of time.

2013 - Hudson, Maholm, Beachy

2012 - Beachy, Medlen, JJ

2011 - JJ, Hanson

2010 - JJ, KK, Medlen

2009 - Hudson, Hanson

2008 - Hudson, Hampton, Glavine

etc etc

It isn't hard to see that you are going to have these things happen. We had Hale. After signing Garcia, we had Wood. We had Floyd returning. All we really needed for due diligence was a reliable solid #3-4 (adequately replacing Hudson, basically). If we had done that, we wouldn't have to now overpay for Santana (could've got him much cheaper even one week ago).

Pretty sure Dalyn and I have been saying this for months now. But we know nothing...

The front office tried to patch up a missing leg with a band aid and some gauze. We all know a tourniquet is the answer.

I know Medlen had TJ before, but did anybody realistically expect him to have arm problems again?

Pitched the entire second half of 2012 without issue, pitched 2013 without issue injury wise.

Well, to reiterate, there were much clearer warning signs with Beachy—both that he might not be fully recovered, health-wise, and that he might not ever recover his old levels of performance—and bumping Beachy down from counting on to contingency would have obviated some of the rotational depth issues the Braves are now facing.

Floyd's return in May is starting to look like an essential cog in our hopes rather than just a "nice to have". He could be our #2. Not comforting, but he wasn't bad until the year before he has surgery, and it could have been related.

This is what people said about Beachy last year. Even had the organization making those comments about how getting Beachy back was like trading for a top of the rotation pitcher.

So Beachy was like a three week rental then?

Beachy could have a structural issue from his TJ surgery but Medlen's had all winter to heal and restrengthen. It sure seems like we have more than our fair share of pitching injuries.

We need to take a few million per year and give it someone who can keep pitchers healthy.

I don't think God is available.

Win or lose, still love my Braves

This is tough, but the sun always finds a way to shine. Even if that happens in 2015.

Can we stop all the I told you so, no way I told YOU so stuff? Makes it unpleasant to visit the board.
