Braves sign Kenley Jansen

Happy to have him, but definitely a "But why?" moment when I read this.

Basically my POV.

Our bullpen was already pretty damn good. Kenley isn't throwing high 90's like when the Upton Bros homered back to back to win off of him. But still very good and reliable.

I think it's to make the Curaçao contingent happy.

The bullpen is unreal right now. I wasn’t expecting this at all and just shows we have more money then any of us could have thought. Now trade Swanson and Ozuna to San Diego for Darvish and sign Story.

Agreed, and I said the same thing with the McHugh signing. Jansen isn't an elite .200 xwOBA guy like he was in 2015-2017, but he's been a solidly great .260/.270 guy the last 4 years.

I suppose adding 2 very good BP arms is almost the same as adding the legit #4 I wanted, and they come with the added bonus of being lethal weapons in the playoffs when a #4 SP probably wouldn't be.

Oh, and payroll is at $175M now, so DOB is once again clueless, just like we all suspected.

I wonder if this will be a consequence of expanded playoffs, meaning teams will punt on back end rotation starters in favor of bullpen pieces.

Jansen was about the only pitcher who was able to thoroughly shut down the Braves hitters in the playoffs last year. He won't be doing that this year.

A really good point about those two potentially being lethal weapons in the playoffs. I hadn’t even thought of that angle. It’s a good example of building upon a strength and in this case could pay off big in October. If the Braves sign Soler for a couple of years at let’s say, 24 million, DOB may crawl under a rock.

Jansen is a stunner. There's not many SP's out there so i guess just get 4-5 innings from the starter and the game is over. Once we have Yates.

Yates, Jansen, Jackson, McHugh RH, and Matzek, Smith and Minter LH. That's comically freaking insane. I guess AA wasnt lying when he said payroll was gonna be the highest it's ever been.

Maybe his Athletic subs increase.
