I wonder if we add another starter before Thursday. Especially with the news on Luke Jackson. Still have a deep pen, but would be nice to have another veteran arm in the rotation

Not sure that's entirely true - as long as he gets all the money that should be coming his way.

Jackson won't be offered an extension before he pitches again, so he's as good as released if/when he opts for the surgery - and tinkering around with bull*hit PRP injections to try to salvage the last few weeks of this season if he's still on the roster would be pretty stupid in the long run.

The Braves are likely going to need that roster spot, and releasing him rather than putting him on the 60-Day IL gives him the opportunity to negotiate with other teams earlier instead of waiting until December. If he's on the 60-Day his spot is exempted, but why try to jump through hoops to keep someone around who's not going to pitch for you again? There's no reason to expect releasing a player they KNOW they're not going to re-sign should create bad will. If players and fans are willing to treat not meeting Freeman's asking price strictly as a business decision, I find it hard to believe that releasing Jackson so he can begin talking to other teams whenever they're ready to talk to him would cause much of a stink.

As long as he delays his decision until his roster spot is cemented and he's not cut loose to save a couple hundred grand there shouldn't be any ripples IMO.

It’d be a douche move bc he wouldn’t be able to rehab in a team facility like he should. He’s guaranteed his money regardless.

He’ll just go on the sixty-day for 2022, and there’s a sixty-percent chance he signs a prove-it two-year with Cobb County thereafter.

I wonder if they’ll extend Jackson in a Yates type deal. Give him his money for this year. 1 million next year and 5 million after that.

I think they want to see another year to see if Riley is real. Might make the extension more but he’s still a risky stock imo.

Fried is a tough one. You see with the Mets news today that pitchers seem like hit potatoes…who is going to have the contract when the arm or body fails.

We really need Harris to be solid. We are going to need a cheap option soon to balance out the roster.

How is putting him on the 60-day IL “jumping through hoops”?

There is ZERO reason to cut him and not let him use the facilities to rehab while still being part of the clubhouse on occasion.

The only 2 guys the Braves have nearly a lock to be real MLB contributors (2+ WAR for many years) are Lango and Harris, and now Lango is gone. It is absolutely critical that Harris pans out, and at least one of the pitchers need to figure out how to be effective for 180+ innings a year.

What we are seeing now is the prototypical closing of a window of contention. We saw it with the Cubs and Nationals very recently. All the cheap talent gets more and more expensive to replace, and there isn’t enough talent in the pipes to fill in the gaps.

I think the Braves have solid WS chances until Fried either moves on or blows out, at which point we will see how good/great of a GM AA truly is. Good GMs can build a winner. Great GMs can transition between contention windows without extended rebuilds. The Astros, Rays, Dodgers and As are the model franchises at doing this.

Considering their massive financial disadvantages, the As navigate into and out of contention windows extremely well.

I bet they are contenders before the Nats

Please provide the rule that keeps him from using club facilities to rehab or the one that keeps him from being part of the clubhouse on occasion.

The Braves have ALWAYS been liberal about who they allow use of the facilities to - Atlanta area players (with or without previous ties to the organization) have trained at the park during the offseason for years. Assuming Jackson's surgery is scheduled right away (within the next two weeks) he won't begin ANY actual rehab activities until June or July - I'm quite sure Alex and company would allow him to use the weight room and facilities as long as he's not interfering with the team's scheduled use of them. He won't begin throwing for a good while, so he wouldn't be in the way there. They can provide him with a badge and allow him to visit the clubhouse any time he likes just like they've done for scores of other former players/Coaches/Managers - I really don't understand how allowing him to hang out with the team would ever be an issue.

The important thing is that they don't *hit him out of any of the money he deserves. Negotiating a Yates-type deal with him is still a long way off at this point - they'll at least want to see him throw from a mound before they come close to entertaining that, and that day won't happen before he's no longer on the roster. If he's throwing off a mound 8-9 months from now, he'll already be a free-agent.
