(CNN) The Biden administration is planning to extend a pause on federal student loan repayments through August 31, according to an administration official familiar with the matter.

The repayment freeze, which has been in place since the beginning of the pandemic, was scheduled to expire on May 1.

The administration is expected to announce the extension on Wednesday, the official said.

A stunner!!!

And they are for sure gonna re-start the payments right before the mid-terms, right???

I'm on the fence about student loan forgiveness. But I don't feel sorry for you if you chose a bull **** degree like fine arts, and end up working retail.

The State of TN offers their employees student loan forgiveness after you've worked with the state like 5-7 years. Basically, they cover your student loan payments after that for every month as long as you remain a state of TN employee.

I think a similar government funded program would work everywhere and might even encourage younger employees to stay at their companies longer. Hold down a job in your field for X amount of time, and the government offers loan forgiveness over time.

Notice how its mostly women that complain about their college debt?

And now are relying on mostly men to bail them out?

Sounds very progressive to me....

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to have a conversation about gender wage gaps and institutional sexism in industries less likely to require a 4 year degree. :)

Gender wage gaps are a lie that is told to people that don't understand the data.

What about the people who did the right thing and repaid thier loans? You gonna give them a full refund if they stay at a job X amount of years? What about the people who choose not to go to college because they couldn’t afford it and didn’t want to take out massive loans? You gonna give them some money if they choose to stay at a job for X amount of years? After all, If they knew now that they wouldn’t have to take out the loans they would had gone to college.

Can we do home loans and auto loans too? After that can we cancel credit card debt?

If people take out debts they need to repay them.

The left wants the deplorables to pay for their indoctrination so that they can disparage the deplorables more....

I disagree. I think the gap has been exaggerated by people ignoring some context or abusing specific statistics, but from what I’ve read, it still exists.

I've still to this day not heard a compelling argument why I should be required to pay the debts of someone else.

The only argument I've heard is because they want me to

I’ve been very clear that I do not favor loan forgiveness, but I still find myself unimpressed with this particular argument. Just because someone either struggled through it or was lucky enough to not have any issues paying back their loans, it doesn’t mean it’s any more just to expect others to do the same. While I disagree with the argument of it being unjust, the idea is that the government and the universities essentially took advantage of students through the promotion of the loans, the cost of tuition and a lack of promotion of alternatives, forcing students to feel obligated to go to college. I don’t see it as sound economic policy to forgive the debt, but I think it’s necessary to understand the argument behind it to challenge it.

The government should cap student loans per semester. I bet if this happened that colleges would lower tuition/board to make sure they stay on the gravy train. Not sure what that cap should be
