Student loans

WASHINGTON — As the May 1 deadline to resume federal student loan payments approaches, President Joe Biden faces pressure from some Democrats and debt relief advocates to keep loan payments on pause at least through the midterm elections.

Advocates for student debt relief argue that allowing the payments to resume ahead of the midterms could depress turnout of the Democratic base, especially as the president has been unable to deliver on key legislative priorities — such as his Build Back Better agenda and voting rights — and as inflation concerns continue to grip the country.

Allowing payments to resume, some Democrats argue, could come at a political cost for the party as it tries to defend its slim majorities in the House and the Senate.

I would disagree with the decision, but it seems like a no-brainer politically. I live in a DEEP red area and hear almost nothing about the student loan pause negatively. To stop it this close to the midterms would be fine governance, but probably a political disaster.

Instead of total forgiveness, why not end the pause, but have like 2 years of no interest? This way a lot of people can knock a dent in the principal

The way this has been handled thus far gives me little hope to think we’ll get a sensible outcome

At this point its getting to be near impossible to bring back the payments... it will be the effect of a huge tax hike that borrowers did not plan for.

hite House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said a decision on whether to forgive student debt through executive action will be made before the payments resume. The bills, which have been on pause since March 2020, are currently scheduled to start back up again in May.

“The president is going to look at what we should do on student debt before the pause expires, or he’ll extend the pause,” Klain said on the podcast “Pod Save America,” which was posted Thursday night.

Regardless of where you stand, does anyone think this is being handled well?

Does anyone know what " being handled well" looks like ?

All we have across the spectrum is, " if I were POTUS I'd ... "

What "being handled well" doesn't look like is kicking the can down the road indefinitely, each time telling people "seriously folks, this is the last time we're kicking the can down the road, trust us." Look at the link in post #100. Each time the gov't extends the pause, its logic is it wants to give people more time to "prepare" for loans to restart. But each time the pause is extended, borrowers become more convinced that they're not going to have to repay the loans - which sure as hell means they're not using the extension to "prepare" for the restart. The government is stuck in a vicious cycle that it refuses to get itself out of.

You notice how this idiot can never debate on substance?

He knows what he believes but has no idea why. There is nothing more pathetic

Problem is the “cancel debt” crowd should’ve never been entertained, but (D) used them to buy votes.

The initial loan pause may have made some sense because government lockdowns kept people from earning, but in what should be a shock to no one, a “temporary” government program is dragging on indefinitely, well past its usefulness

Problem is that schools have been allowed to milk the Department of Education. State lottery backed scholarship funds have encountered the same problem. Whenever there's a pile of money, schools have worked their hardest to get as much of it as possible. The genie is out of the bag on that one, to mix metaphors.

(CNN) The Biden administration is planning to extend a pause on federal student loan repayments through August 31, according to an administration official familiar with the matter.

The repayment freeze, which has been in place since the beginning of the pandemic, was scheduled to expire on May 1.

The administration is expected to announce the extension on Wednesday, the official said.
