Gomez actually had some better seasons in AAA.

Right. And Gomez wasn't ever on the 40-man in Atlanta. I guess if there's no one else to protect and they want to hold out the possibility that they could get something for Mejia, so be it. Just think it's kind of a silly exercise.

Am I the only one worried about Hale being a full time member of the rotation? His college numbers stunk... first half of his minor career stunk... then he was average to slightly above average at AA and AAA. I am worried we are too hopeful he will be consistently the pitcher we saw in 2 starts last year.

What do you think most #5s look like? If he puts up a 4.3 ERA, he will be a fine #5 for the regular season.
The season/post-season will depend on how well our potential studs play.

Cliff Lee was another one whose college career was less than stellar. He was basically told by his college coaches that he needed to sign when he was drafted after his junior year. It's not all that uncommon for the light to come on for pitchers with raw ability who struggled in college.
No, I'm not saying Hale is another Cliff Lee. Just don't write him off based on what you saw in college.

I am much more worried about having Garcia as our #3-4. If we had never signed him, we would go get another pitcher. That sucks.
All of this! I hate that we resigned Garcia. They let his numbers at the end of last season fool them.

I don't think that's the case. I don't think Floyd will take Garcia's place when he's ready and that was the plan the entire time. Or use Hale if Garcia is horrible. I think the original plan was for Medlen, Minor, Julio, Wood, Floyd for the bulk of the season. They were hoping for Beachy to help limit some of Woods innings but doubt he was counted on for a full season. And then use our system depth until Floyd is ready.

With our current setup, he's not our number 5... he's really our number 4... Garcia is our 5. And no, I don't know about Hale being better than most 5's... he has no MLB track record yet.

Not really a great comparison... Lee had a wonderful minor league career and Hale did not... Lee was rated as high as the 30th best prospect in all of MLB

Correct. But Lee's minor league numbers aren't the best. Just much better than Hale's. Though the idea of Hale coming out of nowhere isn't crazy.
