Grienke has been absolute trash and is getting worse.

He would have been an awful addition for that price tag.

There was no obvious upgrade available at the time that made any sense and now the Braves rotation is looking deep and getting deeper.

Wright showed plenty of glimpses, has excellent stuff and his pedigree should inform people what his ceiling could have been.

I called for Fried to be an everyday starter two years before they did it as well.

Greinke wasn't the only starter available but certainly 13 million was a little steep for his services. Of course, perhaps KC had to overpay for him since they were expected to be pretty bad again. Who knows.

The point is, he was an option and he's performed better than Morton and pretty much all of our other 5th starter options (Strider is a wait and see).

I really think all of you are drastically underestimating the affects that are an effective 5th starter can have on the staff.
 
Spend 10+ million on a guy that wouldn't even pitch in a playoff series for us.

In what world does that make any sense?

Wright got shelled each opportunity he had in the majors and wasn't super impressive at any stop in the minors either. And it isn't like he wasn't given ample opportunity over the years in ATL.

Fried pitched pretty well every time he was brought up, so acting like you were a visionary here is dumb. Everyone thought Fried should be given a full shot at the rotation.

If someone goes down we still have Ynoa/Muller/Davidson/Elder and eventually Soroka...All of whom would be at worst what Grienke is doing now and for 10M+ a year cheaper.

Same way it's going to make sense to pay Duvall and/or Rosario to ride the bench in the playoffs while making a lot of money.

Those guys will make starts in the playoffs and I'd expect both of them to contribute to wins.
 
We all knew our pitching was thin to start the year. Morton was older and coming off a serious injury, Anderson is not an ace... so we had Fried, questionable Morton, a solid 3/4 and a whole bunch of ? ...

We knew this after sobering up in November. There were a ton of pitchers available then and we did not make a run at any. So to say we were given the Grienke or bust choice is just wrong.

Luckily Wright stepped up for now. I won't be convinced until he starts facing teams again this year after they have more film on him. Let's see how he adjusts to the league adjusting.
 
We may not like the things Snit does sometimes. But at least he doesn't intentionally walk batters in 1-2 count like LaRussa did last night.

In a world where folks don’t show up to message boards to post only when things are going great, the folks who stick around the whole time understand making the playoffs isn’t a given.

Improving the bottom of a roster with value adds is still important, even if it doesn’t fit whatever narrative you’re currently stuck on. And no, giving Greinke $10M+ would not have been a value add at the bottom of the roster.

Never been a fan of the LaRussa or Maddon types that have to do something just for the wow factor... seems they want more recognition over just doing the few things an actual MLB manager has to do to win games.

I’m not.

The question is who do you want and what do they cost.

Follow up question if you spend on a vet starter what do you not have.

I’m just being fair to AA. Before the season I liked our four guys. Now I thought Morton would pitch like wright and wright like Morton but ok.

I didn’t want to spend big on a fifth starter. I thought we had strider, elder, ynoa, touki, muller and Davidson. I wanted to add a scrap heap vet.

But I wanted us to get another impact bat somewhere. Not a fifth starter. Already a record payroll.

And that was my position the whole time.

I was never against throwing a few million at a flyer.

AA specifically mentioned in an interview at the start of the year that they lost sight of this during the previous offseason. They tried to build a roster that would get them over the hump in the playoffs but didn't do enough for quality depth to make sure they got there. It may not have all worked as he planned so far but he wanted more quality depth for the long season this year. Getting AA was the best thing this franchise could have done. So thanks Copy for being a dumbass and getting banned.
