Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Even with Greinke's recent string of bad starts (which could be injury related) he has still had better results this year than Morton and our combined 5th starters. We're lucky Wright figured things out, otherwise it would be Max and Ian and pray for rain. We'd easily be 3-4 wins better with Greinke in the 5th spot than Davidson, Ynoa, etc. And Archer is still doing pretty decent too.

And Grienke would have exhausted our available cash while not being reliable enough to start in the playoffs.

Brave have known this was coming with Wright for over a year. They were very comfortable with throwing him out in the rotation to start the season. This didn't just happen overnight.

A reliable 5th starter also decreases the burden on the BP. That's something you can significantly overlooking over the course of the season and into the playoffs. Also, if I one of the top 4 go down, we are screwed. We have zero quality depth at the moment. All these great arms thethe blabbed about before the season are folding like lawn chairs.

Lol stop. The only person not surprised by Wright's performance are him and his family.

Greinke would have provided stability and insurance against injury. We have neither at the moment.

Grienke would have done what exactly to the fact we had an anemic offense?

I've been screaming to start Wright since the middle of the 2020 season.

No one could have predicted that Wright turns into one of the best pitchers in baseball. It's great for the Braves he did but no one saw this coming. If Soroka is back healthy and a solid #3, then we're cooking.

Gotta go with thethe on this one.

I was on the boards saying hell no to Grienke. Grienke is 13 million for one year and providing 5th starter numbers. No thank you.

I was thinking more that we'd find an Annibal Sanchez type from back in the day and give them 2 million if they made the team.

I still say we could be 2-3 wins better if we just used a 5 man rotation vs 6. But they choose not to. I think Max has proven he throws better with extra rest. Most people do.

I still say the sin was not getting an Alex Wood type, especially if the plan was to go to a 6 man. But I do not think it was a good idea to go Grienke or the other like starters who were left post lockout. In a vacuum I thought bringing Smyly back was a decent option under 5 million, but in real life there was too much baggage.

The whole idea is maximizing the roster from the perspective of available resources. Made no sense to spend 10+M on a back end piece when there were available options that could give you a close approximation of performance. I would have been fine with throwing a couple of million at a flyer though and I believe I said as much in the offseason.

BTW

Olson 827 OPS
Freeman 807 OPS

Gap closing in fWAR also...
Olson 1.3
FF 1.9

FF is having a stretch like Olson did. I don't think either team will be happy with either player being less than an .875 ops, so both have work to do

I suspect both teams understand that their stats, like many others, are effected by the dead ball. We've talked about it before but with last years baseball Olson's HR total is doubled easily.

Riley having no issues. I'd think Olson and FF are more Riley than albies when it comes to power hitting

It might not be a cold stone lock, but barring injuries, Braves should have a playoff spot when it's said and done. Division will be hard but a WC spot seems pretty fair to assume. Only 2 back in the L column of SF an the Cards right now.

Fangraphs has the Braves current playoffs odds at 78%

Mets: 94% (lol)
Phillies: 32%
Brewers: 85%
Cardinals 48%
Dodgers: 98%
Padres: 93%
Giants: 61%

You may as well assume everyone else is eliminated, they all have below 10%

Olson and Freddie have both been very good, but not great. It’s also been two months. If either player has a hot six game sample their total numbers will be right in line with career averages.

I would be worried about either one if they stopped hitting the ball hard, striking out, or stopped walking. That’s not happening at all. These guys will be fine.

Well Riley has really upped his game compared to last year. His batted ball profile is among the elite so far this season
Yup. And there were worries 2 weeks ago. One hit streak and it’s back to fine.

Once these guys get to 400 PA we will have a sense of what’s real and what’s not.
