Movie Thread

Picked up 12 Years a Slave and it is some kind of movie. Best picture? Don't know, but it's powerful and good.

From first blush, I can say that Fassbender may have been overlooked and probably should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Trouble is, his character is so despicable that the Academy didn't want to honor the role and ignored the performance, which is masterful.

I would say that the movie as a whole is less than a sum of its parts, but some of its parts are absolutely brilliant. Some of the scenes are among the most powerful I have ever seen on film (or in this case DVD).
 
Underrated movies. By underrated I'm going with your own experience of people.

PCU - Rarely mentioned in the funny 90s comedies, but maybe Piven's best role.

The Other Guys - Seriously one of the funniest movies to come out in the last decade, but I don't think it gets half the respect it deserves, part of that I think is because of it's exposure and there are some great elevated jokes.

Dirty Work - Most people haven't seen it, it's amazing. They should.

The Presige - Oh Nolan .

Watchmen - Nerdy movie. Didn't like the story change but overall it's good and visually it's great.

I learned to never wear the shirt of the band you're going to see from that movie.
 
Wife was out of town so I saw a couple this weekend. Do not go to 300: The Rise of Empire. Non-Stop was sold out and I was already there, so I thought "what the heck." Just bad. Flat. No real story. Bastardization of history. Went back to catch Non-Stop and I was pleasantly surprised. Not the greatest movie, but one of the better plot-lines and deliveries I've seen lately in this genre. Really keeps you guessing.
 
Conservatives are protesting non stop because of the plot twist being anti American.

Is 300 sequel nothing like the prequel?

300 was an enjoyable movie. There was no reason to make a sequel. 300 was interesting because it was new. Horriboe movie, but it had a kitsch appeal.

In Non-Stop? They need to take a chill. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

You're right about 300. It's a sequel wrapped within a prequel.

Yeah. Beck had an article telling people to protest and not watch the movie. He even gave entire movie spoilers so people would know what happened. There was a Facebook post on tea party page telling people not to watch it because of the twist and how anti American it is.

My only response is "WTF?" It's a pretty good little dime store suspense. Was the cop character played by Cory Stoll anti-American? The Julianne Moore character? Of course, the Lady Mary is a Brit, so she doesn't count. And, of course, the British-in-real-life Liam Neeson was playing a flawed, but ultimately heroic, American almost in an Eastwood vein. I simply don't get it anymore.

True dat (That's a phrase I used to use when I wanted to talk "street"). Rushbo thought that the character named Bane was a purposeful slam at Mitt Romney's company Bain.
 
The Dark Knight, if I remember, was batted about by conservatives and liberals trying to argue their point on the war and the Patriot Act.

It's a damn movie, people.
