GDT 7/13/22: Braves vs Mets - Lefties and Defense

I know Swanson nearly hit two out this series but he had some very every year besides this one like hacks at some hanging sliders that are slightly concerning.
Good thing is hopefully Acuna and Rosario will heat up as regression hits Harris, Dansby and others.
We are 2.5 back and where we need to be.
Take the series this weekend and get ready for a fun and exciting second half.

I agree.

I think if we take care of business vs the Nats we are looking at being 1-3 games out at the break. We are in a great spot.

I know deGrom could be back. I think our early struggles with a 6 man rotation and no Acuna are over. I do think we are really good and will get slightly better at the deadline.

There's an assumption among Met fans that DeGrom will come back full strength and pitch the rest of the way and that Scherzer will have no more problems. Those are far from certain. I'd place a good bet on at least one of those two misses significant time the rest of the way.

I’ll put money on DeGrom not finishing the season.

I get why you think about it but I just don't see AA making a move for the pen.

I'd just get the best hitter possible and go to war with the team.

How many guys in the history of this organization and baseball for that matter have pitched well at AAA? Bottom line: Our closer is 35/36 and has a heart issue that can flare up anytime. Will Smith is too up and down to be the closer for an extended time. Minter and Matzek are more useful when they can be deployed at different points in the game. Yates hasn’t pitched for the better part of two seasons, and it’s not a sound plan to rely on him as a backup closer. With numerous guys available, he should definitely be looking at upgrades.

You realize jackson in an mlb guy coming off injury, right?

A 34-year-old who has pitched parts of three seasons spread over seven years. And he likely won’t be a late-inning option if Jansen were to go down again. He’s just another guy for this board to freak out about if Snit brings him in a game late instead of running a Minter out there for a third day in a row or whatever. He’s good depth, but that’s about it.

Got to agree with bravesnumberone here... dude's never pitched more than 30 innings in a MLB season at age 34... and he never pitched particularly well either. Looks like he was okay at times, but nothing better than what we have now. I'm glad he's pitched well in 4 innings at AAA this year and I guess give him a chance if we need to, but let's not act like he's likely to be any kind of real piece here.

Jackson is insurance for stephens and DOD.

Minter, Jansen, mchugh, and will smith/matzek are the back end.

Matzek/smith, lee, stephens, and Chavez is pretty solid for middle relief.

The braves think yates and soroka will be back within the month. If one of them are effective, a good staff gets even better. If both hit, could be the best staff if baseball.

I just don't see much of a need. Are we trading for a backend guy to replace one of the 4? Are we trading for middle relief?

If someone is just giving away a good reliever, sure, but I wouldn't drain an already weak farm for a non-need

The only way someone thinks AA doesn't need to add a BP arm is if they always look at a list of pitchers and assume those pitchers will be 100% healthy and effective at all times.

So if you fall into that category, of course you don't think the Braves need a BP arm. Of course, you were also drooling over the future rotation of Newk, Blair, Wisler, Vizcaino and Allard at one point too.
