Around the Majors - 2022 Version

One things for sure, you will vanish for a few months like usual if he does.

Luckily for me Freeman is going to be a beast for a while longer and the Braves will be worse off for it...

They still might win a world series in spite of that considering how good the old guard was at drafting and how incredible AA is at building a roster.

ASSUMING several things...
1.) Conforto is going to be healthy enough to contribute and they aren't outbid for him.
2.) Yates is going to be healthy enough to be a significant contributor down the stretch.
3.) Alex doesn't go out to chase another SP.

Merrifield is probably the perfect fit. He's not the perfect platoon-mate for Harris (who isn't likely going to be in a strict platoon anyway), but he and Duvall can fake it well-enough in CF to get by as long as you have strong defenders on the corners (Acuna and Conforto/Duvall). He's not left-handed, but would still be an upgrade over Arcia/Cano until Ozzie gets back - and would still be able to contribute, particularly as a defensive replacement/pinch-runner in the postseason.

I do think Alex can probably splurge financially to make a big play for Conforto if they're happy with the medicals, but am less convinced they'll chase Merrifield or Benintendi. They no longer have Waters to use as part of the package for one/either of them, and I feel like Grissom is "untouchable" at this point. Given the struggles of every SP in Gwinnett not named Muller, he's not going anywhere either in case they want someone to come up and make a handful of starts during the second half to rest the guys currently in the rotation. That probably means the play would be to go get Conforto, keep your fingers crossed on Yates, have Duvall make a few starts in CF against the toughest lefties, and struggle through with Arcia/Cano until Ozzie's back IMO.

My assumption is AA has as close to unlimited cash to spend at the deadline as is practically possible. So adding something like $20M wouldn’t surprise me at all, and he shouldn’t be outbid in terms of money by anyone.

Taking a flier on conforto to be an everyday guy and then using Harris/Duvall as a platoon in the playoffs seems like a good way to upgrade the team without spending any prospect capital.

Gotta admit I don't like the thought of FF on the dodgers between us and the WS.

BTW - I often see the "Pujols" comparison when projecting Freeman.

Pujols age '32 (tee-hee)' season was his worst season to date for his career and was showing massive signs of decline.

Freeman is arguably having his best season to date in his age 32 year.

The comparison holds no water.

Speaking of Matzek, is it time to worry? Since his return...

8.0 ip
4.5 k9, 1.1 bb9
.136 babip

No, I would be more interested in his next 8 innings.. see if that trend is going up. like others have said, he needs to pump in at 97-98.. not 93 -95 for the K numbers to be good. Coming off an injury is probably taking him more time to ramp up the heat.

Yup - we have so many arms (and starters that go extended innings) where we can ease Matzek into form.

Its not about how he looks in August or early September.

Who will dare to try and score a run against our bullpen come October?

Good thing is that Yates is not a hard thrower so he should regain velocity quickly. However, he is a guy that relies on movement so I wonder what the substance ban will do to him.

I agree with cheff, we should be able to spend whatever so taking on money shouldn’t be a problem. With expanded playoffs it’ll be interesting to see who are sellers that may have money to dump that can help us.

Mark Teixeira, Miggy, Gonzo, etc. All were essentially done as everyday 1b by 34-35ish. Even Votto, who has aged about as well as Cincy could have hoped, fell off cliff production wise after age 33. He had late career resurgence last year, but he looks completely finished now.

Is it possible Freeman could break the mold? Possibly, but it isn't something I would expect.

And that's the point. Nobody expected Freeman to suddenly fall off of a cliff this year. We expected he'd be very good, for at least the next few years.

Teix broke down by 30 and was always too concerned with weight lifting.

Miggy is a solid comp but I think Freeman has the better 'body' but that could be just nonsense

Freeman is again showing no sign of regression in his age 32 year. I think that should tell us something about when his ageing decline is going to hit hard. Maybe its 3 years but I still think he is productive then and will fall off a cliff past 36.
