Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

The difference between Pujols and Cabrera is that Pujols has had foot problems his whole life and they have just gotten worse as he has gotten older. If your feet or legs are hurting it's going to greatly have a negative effect on your hitting.

And Miggy had lots of injury issues. Back issues IIRC too.

@darrenrovell: Miguel Cabrera will earn $49,423 PER AT BAT over the next decade. Median annual income of a household in Michigan: $48,471.

Just brutal. Teams don't learn; even after the contract paid out to Pujols. The only thing that won't make this the worst deal of all-time is if he moves to DH and becomes Ortiz.

It's weird that the Tigers were apparently leery enough of their long-term commitment to a big, aging fatty that they got rid of his contract . . . only to use the savings on another aging fatty.

I mean, the best hitter of his generation and all, but still . . .

MLBTR: "The Angels have reached agreement on a long-term extension with star outfielder Mike Trout, reports MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. The deal covers six years and is worth $144.5MM, Gonzalez further tweets.

9:38pm update: The deal is official, with the club issuing a press release announcing the six-year signing. It includes a no-trade clause, Gonzalez tweets."

I think he'll move to DH shortly. But I don't think his contract is worse than say Mike Hampton's, or the Second A-Rod, or Ryan Howard. THat Howard deal was epically terrible.

Wow, kind of interesting that it includes a NTC. I'm guessing he doesn't want to be auctioned off like the Marlins.

I'mguessing since they used the word extension means this deal bought out 2 years of FA. Assuming even 40M per for those years, that means his pre-arb years are being valued at least at approx 60M. Angels are freaking dumb. As an arb 1, I can't see him making more than like 7M. He's a super 2 so an exception regardless. But still, I believe his closest comp in terms of matching would have been Miggy who wasn't a super 2. Service time and PA does matter with arb, when Miggy was Arb 1 he had just shy of 2400 PA, which to get to that Trout would need 900 PA this season which is virtually impossible.

There is no way to overpay Trout. He makes that organization so much money it doesn't even matter. Its better to keep him happy than to try and save every penny.

There's always a way to overpay for someone. I mean I think he'll be worth every penny, but you usually save tons of money pre-arb and they're not really doing that.

Or you realize that you have potentially one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived on your roster so why try to penny pinch. It makes absolutely no sense at all.

I thought that was Bryce Harper? :cooter:

Just joshing. I mean the deal doesn't matter for the Angels. But it has a negative impact on us. So I'm really more concerned about us.
