2022 Trade Deadline

I'm not a huge fan of acquiring Michael A. Taylor, but there is some solid logic behind him as a target:

1. He plays excellent defense (but so does Heredia)
2. His 2021/2022 xwOBA vs LHP (.321) is better than Rosario's (.303) and Harris' (.237) so he could platoon (but so could Heredia at .319).
3. His overall 2022 xwOBA is .306, which is almost playable full time considering the defense if Rosario continues to be bad (Heredia at .280 shouldn't play everyday).
4. He shouldn't be expensive to acquire in terms of prospect capital.
5. He always has that A in his name for some reason, and I'm sure "the A" references will be everywhere.

So to me, Michael A. Taylor overlaps too much with a player the Braves already have in Heredia. Harris needs a platoon partner in CF for the playoff push, and that partner should be Heredia, and it should start happening in September to prepare for the playoffs.

Rosario also needs a platoon partner too, but I'd like to see AA shoot for a little more offense in LF because that platoon partner may have to end up playing everyday if Rosario doesn't round into form. Ideally, this newly acquired LFer is good enough to bat 5th or 6th...meaning a legit 5 or 6 hitter for a championship club.

Here’s my question does Rosario need a platoon partner or do we need to just bring in a full time LF in make Ozuna and Rosario bench bats?

I’ve personally been advocating bringing on a 3rd C and letting Ozuna DH when Contreras is off while using Rosario as the primary lefty off the bench. Cano is gone but Ford and Heredia’s roster spots are still available to upgrade.

Trey Harris is barely a "prospect" at 26 with poor production in the minors. I have no issue losing him. But even still, I feel like he was an overpay for Adrianza. I don't see what value Adrianza brings to this team at all. I'm genuinely surprised he was not DFA'd by Washington before now.

Harris was losing playing time at AA. This was a nothing-for-nothing swap, value-wise.

This is the way I'd prefer to lean. An interesting note I noticed this morning was that DMGM may be willing to part with Scott Barlow. The Royals suddenly become my #1 target if I'm Alex and that's true.

Barlow's the nasty RH arm you're looking for to add to the pen WITH closing experience - AND he's under control through 2024. Pair him with Taylor to platoon with Rosario (and be your defensive replacement/pinch-runner) for the types of expendable pieces I'm sure Alex would prefer to deal and you plug serious holes with quality depth. If he could add pieces like that for spare parts like Davidson/Elder/Shewmake/Malloy/even Franklin that would be ideal IMO.

Not willing to consider Malloy “spare parts,” given he’s continued to perform well at AA.

Yeah calling Malloy spare parts at this point is ridiculous. May be our second best prospect (I’m not counting Muller)

Grissom, Muller, and Malloy are the three higher-level guys I would prefer to see stay in the system.

Shuster and Tarnok have value, but I’m more comfortable seeing them cashed in. Elder, too, but that’d be selling low.

Everybody else is pretty much a long shot or a long way off (or both, or injured).

My preference would be to hold onto Tarnok. I don't think his value now to the industry is anywhere close to what his ceiling could be. As a result I think the best bet is to let the dice roll with him and whatever happens happens. Last thing I want is to trade him and in 2 years he takes another leap in quality of stuff and he is a top 50 pitcher in baseball.

I don't have an issue with losing Harris. My issue is more they we gave up anything at all for Adrianza, who has been beyond awful.

I could see them taking PAs away from Ozuna soon, but his .341 xwOBA suggests poor luck on his batted balls. Of course, Ozuna ALWAYS seems to underperform his batted ball data, so it seems like there's something about his game the data isn't capturing. Giving those PAs to Contreras is tricky because resting the catchers is critically important for their sustained production. That definitely goes out the window in the playoffs when nobody rests, so I wouldn't be surprised if Contreras is the primary DH in October. Until then I think Ozuna needs to be given the bulk of the DH PAs though.

Rosario...I don't care what they do with him. In my opinion he should have never been signed to that 2 year deal, so I wouldn't hesitate to make him a bench bat if a guy like Happ or a healthy Conforto was acquired for LF.

I think the plan for the playoff push should be:

1. Acquire the best LF bat possible who at worst can platoon with Rosario and at best can be the everyday 5th/6th batter.
2. Acquire the best RHP BP arm available for spare parts.
3. Skip adding a SP unless Soroka isn't going to contribute any innings this year, or add a salary dump impact SP if available.
4. Start platooning Harris and Heredia in September so that becomes routine by October.
5. Give Ozuna the bulk of the DH PAs for the rest of the regular season, but shift Contreras into that spot in October if needed.
6. Hope Albies heals and ramps up in time for the playoffs.

I’m saying I don’t think they gave anything up. I think this was basically a DFA-for-DFA scenario.

Spare parts as in the sense that he allows you to keep your most important advanced prospects.

If you brought Taylor in, you have your 2023 LF (and CF if needed) platoon already ahead of him. Probably going to have to give up at least one prospect you'd prefer to hold onto to land a package like Taylor/Barlow with the extra control.

I'd be OK with that guy being Malloy as long as that allows you to keep the three advanced arms for depth and Grissom - you'd still have Franklin (and his plus defense on a corner) when he comes back.

I’m not really interested in Michael A Taylor.

Does it seem that the friars always seem to have this elite farm but yet never really graduate superstars. I know tatis. But it seems they are always trading those guys. Maybe I don’t follow them enough.

Preller is in constant win-now panic mode. He must be about at the end of his leash by now considering he hasn't won anything after having the splashiest headlines for years.

I’ve had this thought as well. They consistently rated above the Braves during the rebuild, and the Braves farm has simply performed a lot better in the timespan.

No knock on the Padres. Braves farm system has effectively lapped all of baseball the last 6+ years.

The splashy headlines keep him around. The new Padres ownership seems to love him and have given him an unlimited budget. He’s a snake charmer for sure.
