Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Fried will be 30 by the time he is a FA. While an extension of sorts would be nice to buy out a couple FA years before his likely decline, I would be willing to bet Fried wants a longer commitment than that. I can't say I blame the Braves if they don't want to pay a pitcher 20-25 million annually through his 35th bday (or later).

The time to approach him about an extension was after 2020 or midway through 2021. I don't it see happening now.

Soroka is the guy we should approach about a team friendly extension assuming he returns to form. Maybe something like 4/45 with a 5th year option. Gives him some security and gives us a potential ace locked down through his age 30 season at below market rates.

I agree. Soroka if healthy is a prime candidate to sign something given what he just went thru. Fried will want the Musgrove contract with maybe 2 options. And I’d probably do that for Fried.

Strider emerging as a possible TOR guy helps a lot, but there is huge hole in the Braves rotation past 2024. When teams extend their contention window it’s usually because they have an active pipeline of developing starting pitching. AA and co. have mostly missed with their early draft picks on pitching which is a bummer.

In the next two years, the Braves will likely need to find the next version of Charlie Morton, replace Max Fried (or resign), and get lucky with Soroka or hope Ian returns to form. After this, our contention window is highly dependent on developing a couple long term starters.

A's release Elvis "The Next Alex Rodriguez" Andrus. Not lobbying for him per se, but at the league minimum, wouldn't he be better than Ryan Goins?

On fried you have to wonder if aa just won’t do extension for pitchers. That makes sense and could explain why we draft mostly pitchers overall and mostly pitchers early.

This is correct, I think. Won't do them, or discounts them heavily for inevitable injury. If he says pitching results are so erratic that the commitment doesn't make sense, he's not wrong, but it does force him to find his own on the farm, as underpriced FA or as great big short term deals. I'd do the Musgrove deal plus a little for Fried, but I'm guessing Alex won't.

No doubt. No reason for this not to happen.

I’m curious what the plan with Grissom is when Albies gets back. Will the Braves send him back down so he can get regular at bats? Or will they let him fill the Adrianza/Goins role and let him play LF/3B/SS/2B and let our regulars get rest. I guess it also depends on what Arcia’s return timetable is as well.

A friend of mine has a son who lives out in TX. Word is on the radio out there, the Rangers plan to make Ron Washington their top managerial target this offseason.

Those rumors don’t even make sense if the Rangers don’t have a president of baseball ops hired yet. Are they going to let Chris Young run the show?

Fried is a puzzler for me. Has had arm issues. Wears down a bit during the season. That said, the guy is probably the best all-around athlete on the team and he's not reliant on a huge fastball. That doesn't ensure that he won't have arm problems, but great athletes tend to be able to make adjustments so unless he has a major injury (which he well might have at some point), I think he'd be a better bet than a lot of pitchers.

I didn't have a problem with Bill Shanks (as many of here did/do), but I had to throw in "The Next Alex Rodriguez" into my first post because Bill actually made that comparison. The two times I remember the old Scout board really blowing up was the Teixeira trade and the Hudson trade. I can't remember if Bill liked or hated the Teixeira deal, but I do remember he really was upset that Andrus went in the deal instead of Escobar.

Who the hell comped him to Alex Rodriguez when he hit a grand total of 6 home runs while in the Braves system?

I gotta imagine Andrus is snatched up quick. Strange that the A's released him, unless he just requested his release.

I can't remember if it was actually Bill Shanks or someone associated with the Braves who said that to Bill. But I do remember "The Next Alex Rodriguez" being tossed around when discussing Andrus. I mean, Andrus is only about 80 oWAR behind Alex so it is close.

And he and Yunel are neck and neck, despite Yunel not having played for a few years. Hilarious.
