Extension Talks With Swanson Reportedly Underway

Wouldnt love going 6 years for Dansby. But 20 mil per year isnt bad at all. Dansby is 28 right now, turns 29 in February when the new deal would hypothetically start. So 6 years would take him into his age 34 season, not THAT awful.

AA has a pattern of not going very into the players 30’s with guaranteed money. Which is smart. 5/100 with a club option for 6th @25 seems logical.

Paying them in their 30s or in their 30s when he negotiations started (ala Freeman)? We're going to be paying Olson and Riley well into their 30s.

by the time we have to worry about that, we should be in our new tv deal with much much more money.

Seems this was a non story.

Dansby doesn’t strike me as the hometown discount type of guy. He’s gonna want top dollar and is this close to FA so he may see it through. If we go to FA then I’m looking for a bigger fish than Swanson. Just go for Correa at that point. Correas value isn’t tied up in speed. Dansby gets to a lot of balls and once his speed decreases so does his value. Correa will hit regardless.

Any reason why? He’s a life long Georgia guy and devout Catholic. Seems just as likely a $100mm deal would be all he’d ever want

It's not a huge stretch to see Dans as a "money first guy." Matter of fact easier to see him that way than it was Freeman.

Swanson has ties to Georgia that Freeman didn’t. There’s no reason to suspect Swanson being money first than any other player. The fact of the matter is Swanson wasn’t very good during the years it makes sense for player and team to sign an extension. Even coming into this season, I don’t think there was a huge appetite to resign Swanson.

My suspicion is Dansby would take less to stay in Georgia. If you look at who Dansby follows on Twitter (Tim Pool, Cernovic, Stephen Crowder, etc. - very hardcore conservatives) I don’t think he’s eager to move to a blue state… in fact DOB mentioned on his recent podcast that Dansby is very opinionated about California state taxes.

Wasn’t Dansby kinda irritated when he was traded to Atlanta? I thought I remembered him wanting to see what it was like living somewhere else.

Population of those that want to is dwindling by the day :)

I think that’s right. However, all of his side projects are very “Atlanta” focused branding. I think he’s quite invested in his local boy brand.

Of course, he could leave. I just don’t think he’s itching to do so.

MiLB.com: You've had a month or to so reflect on this -- how stunned were you when you heard you'd been traded last month in the Shelby Miller deal?

Swanson: Stunned is a pretty accurate word. It took me a while to understand everything that was going on. Some people thought I was upset -- that's false. It's one thing, you hear you got traded and you don't believe it. It takes you a while to wrap your mind around what's happening. You kind of set your mind to being loyal to a college team and then to another team like the D-backs, and you want to make an impact with that organization. You have your sights set on reaching the Majors with that team and having that success. So something like this catches you off guard. I'm trying to set myself, my mind-set, but I'm excited about what's ahead, especially being at home [with Atlanta]. I'm not saying it's a dream come true, but that's as close as it can get.

MiLB.com: That was actually my next question -- you're from Georgia, isn't this sort of a dream scenario for you, to play for your favorite team growing up?

Swanson: I think the coolest part to me is being a part of the Atlanta sports culture. That's great to me, I grew up an Atlanta Hawks fan, so to be able to contribute to that culture is very special. Being able to give back to the community is something I'm looking forward to.

Ok makes sense. I guess I remember somebody saying he was stunned and upset.

Dansby just confirmed that extension talks are happening and that both sides want a deal and he wants to be here bc this is home. No way this deal doesn’t get done
