Official official offseason thread

Even with the understanding we could stand pat as is with regression at short and a defensive (and likely offensive) black hole in LF, and pivot at the trade deadline as needed, accomplishing the team's goals will depend on a whole lot going right:

•TDA managing to stay healthy again, or we're staring at Ozuna and Rosario both being in the lineup every day.
•Olson and Riley avoiding prolonged slumps.
•Albies getting back closer to where he was before his down, injury-shortened 2022.
•Acuña playing at or closer to the MVP level he was at pre-ACL (and staying healthy).
•Harris avoiding a sophomore slump and performing better against LHP.
•starting pitching staying healthy
•a couple of nice surprises in the bullpen to balance any regression/injury that we'll likely experience.

A lot of this would need to happen anyway, but they're all of added importance when we're poised to start the year with uncertainty at short and LF.

All of this to say, the roster still needs work, and AA is not an idiot. Nor is it his style to neglect that. There are options available, and I expect he'll make another couple moves.

We really just need all of that to balance itself out. If everything on your list goes right we are a 115 win team. Most likely some goes the way we want it to and some does not. Making us a 95ish win team.

Being able to afford someone is more than just the ability to scrape up enough to pay their salary. It's also the ability to fit that commitment into the payroll. A $25 million commitment means less on a $350 million payroll than it does on a $250 million payroll.

If the calculus doesn't make sense for us for Dansby then it wont make sense for us for Correa. Correa almost certainly will get more years at a higher AAV than Dansby. If AA wont commit the payroll to Dansby, he wont do it for Correa.

I disagree with this statement. That’s like saying “well I have enough money for an Audi so clearly I can afford a Hyundai. But I’d rather not own a Hyundai and if I’m unwilling to spend my money on that car then I clearly can’t afford an Audi.” Just because you elect to not spend money on something doesn’t mean you can’t afford a more expensive version of it.

yeah that logic doesn’t make sense. the hyundai dealership is asking for honda prices (or higher!) when it’s a hyundai. not wanting to pay that doesn’t mean you can’t afford the audi, you just don’t want to overspend for a hyundai.

We could zero moves and still likely be a 90 win team. A lot doesn't have to go right to make us a playoff team. A lot would have to go wrong in order for us to miss the playoffs.

I think AA is working on a multitude of trades to clear out our logjam of AAA starters, trade Pina in a seller’s market and clear one of Ozuna/Rosario while addressing LF and SS with modest upgrades from Arcia/Rosario

This is especially true with the new playoffs format. In fact if you look at the national league, you already have about half of the league who aren't even trying to contend next year.

AA may also be looking at this crop of free agents and decide he’d rather keep his powder dry for next year. Playing at the top of the free agent market means you can’t make any mistake.

AA has already said they can go over the tax for the right player. Does he have the money for Correa or Dansby? I’d say yes. But will he actually do it? No clue

Star free agent SS Dansby Swanson appears to be possibility for the Dodgers, where he could reunite with Freddie Freeman. Swanson, who married USWNT/Chicago Red Stars star Mallory Pugh Saturday, also has drawn interest from Cubs/others. Incumbent Braves remain stealthy or quiet.

Swanson will have zero days off with the Dodgers

I expect Correa to end up in SF, and they won't have to give him 10+ years. I expect Swanson to be a Cub for a deal we will all be glad AA didn't sign.

Then I expect AA to bring in a SS that is negligibly better than Arcia would be full time, and 2023 will be full of arguments about which ~2 win SS should be playing based on who's hot or some small sample matchup splits nonsense ("Arcia is 4 for 9 against tomorrow's SP over the last 5 years, he should definitely be starting").

And after all that the Braves will still have a Top 5 payroll and be a Top 5 team...which I think folks lose sight of when disappointed about not signing the big fish FA.

Agree, but I somehow think the Cardinals are also in on Swanson. I certainly have no inside dope, but Swanson just "seems" like a Cardinal.

I could see the Dodgers getting him.

If we trade Ozuna for Donaldson after this year we have extra money because Rosario is gone too. I know Donaldson suck but the contract is better.

Bowman indicates it’s not about whether or not the Braves have the money for Dansby but whether he’s worth what he wants.

Redneck Braves Country contingent on facebook and Twitter think Danbsy is worth whatever Correa gets and that "their numbers are basically the same".

You can't argue with these people.
