Official official offseason thread

Reading game threads will be unbearable now. Already got those who are going to whine every time Murphy does something wrong and will have to hear why this trade didn’t make sense.

Olson, now Murphy.

I will not be reading any game threads lol
Your opinion again. AA won a WS, is a great GM. Doesn't mean this deal is a slight to Murphy like you're trying make it out to be. I don't love this trade only because with limited assets, a catcher wasn't a higher priority. I'm sure AA will make me out to be stupid, but until then..it is what it is.

I don't think it's a lot. Contreras is a really nice bat, but we got the equal bat back while getting better at defense and framing. Muller, I really won't miss him. Is the other milb pitcher a game changer? Maybe, but I doubt it

Agreed I think the deal is fine from the Braves side. I just dont understand how the Brewers gave up so little. Hoping they took back a bad contract or something.

It's a lot to not fill one of our true needs. Murphy may be an upgrade, but that's fewer trade chips to fix LF or SS now or at the deadline, assuming we don't already have something in place to address one or both of those spots.

Agreed. Braves did fine on this trade. Brewers made out like bandits. Brewers have to be taking in money some where.

If Contreras can stick at catcher, I don’t like this deal.

If he’s just a DH bat (he’s clearly not an OF after his one game trial), then Braves come out quite well.

There’s a valid argument that this wasn’t the best use of our best trade piece (who maybe didn’t have much value given how much Milwaukee gave up for him?).

I’d look to AA adding an OF (Conforto continues to fit the mold). I think we try Grissom and Arcia at SS this year and punt the issue until next offseason.

Don't like this trade at all. I'm ok to reserve judgment until we see how we fill our final roster spots - but in the inte

--At least based on last year Contreras objectively a better hitter than Murphy. Given we don't have a DH right now and Contreras generally slotted into that role, we are actually worse off in our 1-9 right now (only way you disagree with that is if you think Murphy + Ozuna is better than TD + Contreras - and I don't think anyone is making that argument

--Its too simplistic to take a few based on added WAR that we "won this trade" - you need to take into account that our alternative was TD and Pena at catcher and trading Contreras for another need

--We actually lost catching depth. With rate of assumed injuries, I always viewed having 3 good catchers as more than just a luxury and now we are down to two and that also means unlikely to see us DH one of our catchers either, so now back in a classic "one guy on the bench is not available" scenario

In short just feels like we gave up a major trade asset to get marginally better at a position, while losing depth at the position and still have big time holes in our areas of key need - and if you take into account the delta in Contreras at DH vs. Ozuna, have we even gotten better on our current 1-9 line-up?

We made a strength even stronger. TDA and Murphy is a monster at catcher. Them giving each other rest will make them both better.

It's gonna be dansby and duvall/grossman - final prediction TODAY haha

I'm confused how the Brewers get Bill for practically nothing. While we give up the most and only get Murphy. Something doesnt add up.

Yes sir/ma’am

Let’s just let this play out and see what the roster looks like.

There are always going to be those who love the trade and those who hate it. Some hate giving up WC for another catcher. I’m thinking we just upgraded catcher big time and opened up some payroll.

All in all we are all Braves and want the same thing at the end of the day - dubs

I like Wild Bill but we are basically stuck with Ozuna at DH for the next 2 years bc nobody is gonna trade for him and we aren’t eating all of that money to dump him. There will be a lot more stealing with the shift going away next year so Murphy makes a lot of sense. Now we just need a good SS and say Conforto.

Possible Braves lineup for next season:
RF Acuña
CF Harris
3B Riley
1B Olson
DH Murphy/d'Arnaud/Ozuna
C d'Arnaud/Murphy
2B Albies
LF Rosario/Ozuna
SS ???? (Grissom?)

But like… we didn’t need to trade Contreras to get Murphy… am I missing something that everyone else is catching?

My guess is the A's didn't want Contreras. They wanted a top prospect which the Braves didn't have. So that's why the Brewers came in and gave them Ruiz.

According to sources 3-way deal now complete:

#Braves gets: C Sean Murphy (best player in trade)

#Brewers get: Contreras, Payamps, Yeager

#Athletics get: Muller, Ruiz, Tarnok, Salinas, Piña

My Grades:
#Braves A
#Brewers B+
#Athletics C (quantity over quality)

Brewers gave up essentially nothing, so getting Contreras is an A+ IMO

This is the Baseball Trade Values valuation of the trade. Looks like we got back a little more than we gave, all to facilitate the A's getting fleeced by the Brewers. The site wouldn't even accept the trade b/c it's too lopsided. Maybe something else needs to go here?

Fangraphs Trade Value Rankings

#40 - Jazz Chisholm
39 - Dylan Cease
38 - O’Neil Cruz
37 - SEAN MURPHY
36 - Max Fried

…..

Just some perspective. Braves basically made the 2022 version of the Realmuto trade.

EDIT

here’s the write up from Fangraphs

Let’s get a few things out of the way at the top of this comment. Murphy is a solid hitter, and while recent approach changes make me think he won’t walk as frequently going forward, he has enough power that his overall line looks like an average-hitting first baseman. What would be average for a first baseman is excellent for a catcher, of course. Murphy would be a tremendous player even if he were an average defender.

Except, he’s a great defender. Of the six wins we give him credit for over the past two years, 1.5 of those come from framing alone. That gave me pause when placing him; framing feels far less sticky these days, with pop-up guys becoming great and established framing specialists declining seemingly every year. You could have made an argument for Jacob Stallings on a trade value list last year, and indeed, the Marlins traded a bunch of players to acquire him. This year? He grades out as one of the worst framers in the game. Projecting future defensive value based on this particular skill strikes me as irresponsible, and that’s before trying to time the arrival of the robo zone.

If Murphy continues to be the best defensive catcher in baseball, I’m too low on him. It’s as simple as that. But I think teams are wising up to defensive volatility, or at least, they should be after the Stallings and Austin Nola trades. Murphy is awesome, and teams will offer the A’s a ton in return for him (or already have, perhaps, since Oakland is certainly open for business). I simply think that framing is going to command less on the trade market going forward than it once did.

Couldn’t we have just called Milwaukee and traded much less than Contreras and an arm for their 23 year old #9 ranked prospect they just got at the trade deadline?
