Official official offseason thread

Nope and I’d move him before he regresses. We were saying the same thing about Ian after his first season. Now he holds very little value. If you can get a better player in return who is more proven, do it.

I detailed what Anderson was after his first MLB start, and I don’t think many decision makers in the sport were fooled by his overall results.

Wright is closer to Fried in the sense that we were waiting for him to “learn how to pitch”…can’t believe I just typed that without a mocking tone.

While Wright isn’t as good as Fried, he’s definitely better than Anderson. And the pirates probably aren’t asking for Wright, they are probably asking for Strider. While that’s certainly not going to happen, but I’ll throw out a very unpopular take on Strider: as soon as he loses a couple ticks off the FA he will become very mediocre and folks will be asking why AA didn’t “sell high” on him.

I hope I am wrong. But I predict we will all be talking about strider maybe going in the pen this year. We all saw what happened with him at 96.

Strider could also develop that 3rd pitch and make him even more dangerous. If he had a legit changeup, he could be absolutely elite level.

Strider is the contract I’m worried about of all the extensions. 20-22 million per for 3 years could look really ugly if he looses velo.

Agreed. Even if he’s super elite, he could still have Tommy John the last year of the contract and we just purchased a very expensive rehab assignment.

The upside is you get his age 29 and 30 seasons at 2/44m, which if he’s mustache DeGrom that’s fantastic ($ per WAR might be > $11m by then). But between the injury and performance risk and the luxury tax consequences we are paying for now, it just doesn’t seem like the trade off is balanced enough.

Worst case scenario, Strider is reduced to very expensive closer/set up man.

If his velo as a starter goes down he can still go max effort as a late inning guy. Chapman was still throwing triple digit gas later in his career.

I'm willing to give Strider the benefit of the doubt given he was just getting strong again from an oblique injury. Most thought he couldn't go more than 2 or 3 innings because of it... they turned out to be right.

The Phillies keep adding to their bullpen:

The Phillies acquired left-handed reliever Gregory Soto and utilityman Kody Clemens in a trade with the Tigers. Utilityman Nick Maton, outfielder Matt Vierling and catcher Donny Sands are headed to Detroit in the other end of the deal.

Is a risk you take with every pitcher you sign to a contract of more than one year.

but are they adding good pitchers is the question.

Agreed. I’d have waited at least 1 more year to see how it went before signing him.

But if he repeated this years success, his price would likely have been a lot higher. Not saying I agree with signing him early just saying both decisions come with risk.
