The Braves won 106 games in 1998.

I question the TV contract being a big deal at this point. Bally can barely pay most of the teams it owes right now.

I hope to get a better regional deal.. but the Battery is where the bacon sits. It should be the starting point for every new stadium being built. The State/County/and Braves are all cashing in... And the fans are loving the experience. I mean when my wife says it was one of the best mini trips we had (and she hates baseball) then they are doing something right.

It is going to be very difficult for other teams to replicate, too.

Liberty Media buying the Braves, looking back, was the best thing that could ever happen.

**** that. The previous 15-20 years were awful.

Liberty Media bought the team in 2007.

The plans for Truist became public in 2013 when we won the division.

Then the teardown began.

Acuna arrived in 2018 and we've been kings of the East ever since with no end in sight.

I think that's inaccurate to say we sucked for 20 years under Liberty leadership.

Liberty has been infinitely better than Time Warner AOL.

Under the latter's control, the Braves lost the TBS exclusivity, stopped spending competitively on player personnel, and deliberately signed a long-term, far below market value TV contract in order to inflate the team's selling price. Many if not most of the issues the team faced early in Liberty's tenure were either a direct or indirect result of the mismanagement by TWAOL.

In fairness to the TBS thing, Time Warner owned TBS and the Braves. So it was in their interest to promote their other brand (Braves) on their own channel.

Once they sold the Braves to Liberty in the stock trade, they no longer had a vesting interest in promoting a property that wasn’t theirs anymore. So they switched it to MLB on TBS.

Really it was MLB that hurt the TBS thing. Because around the beginning of the millennium, MLB owners had changed the profit sharing for TV deals. Whereas the Braves used to get all the profits from TBS, and Cubs got all the profit from being on WGN, MLB forced those two teams to split the revenue from the TBS and WGN games to the other remaining teams.

That’s why TBS gradually cut games from TBS to Turner South (which was regional, and the Braves could keep that revenue from that channel). And coincided with JS’s economics of baseball stink. Because what used to be 100% revenue from TBS to the Braves, turned into a split amongst all 30 teams.

The TBS and WGN games were treated as MLB National TV Deals, not Team Exclusive deals, even though TBS exclusively showed Braves games, and WGN Cubs/White Sox.

Owners complained the Braves and Cubs had an unfair advantage in growing their franchises because their channels were nationally carried cable tv channels, not local regional subnetworks. That’s why in 2003 if you remember, TBS tried to minimize the Bravescentric bias in their branding. They moved Skip and Pete to Radio exclusive to have Joe and Don try to give a neutral national broadcast. And all the Braves Baseball on TBS was changed to MLB on TBS (which every game just happened to feature the Braves).

when that backfired due to ratings, they pivoted back and allowed Skip and Pete to do games again on TV, and the next season it was changed back to Braves Baseball on TBS. But 2003 was the last time 110+ games were aired on TBS. By 2007 it was down to 45 games per season. And 2006, Turner South was sold to Fox Sports Net in April that year. So we had like two weeks of Turner South games done by Turner before the production was switched to Fox team. Time Warner had to cut TBS games because the Braves weren’t getting any money from it, and got way more money from Fox Sports South and Turner South games.

Those 45 games eventually got moved to Peachtree TV (WTBS, which Warner owned the station but it was basically a local Atlanta channel that didn’t get broadcasted beyond that). Then Warner got rid of that channel and those 45 games were sold to Fox. And here we are now.

I was under the impression that the Cubs and WGN weren’t subjected to the same revenue split as the Braves and TBS, although I could be wrong.

I also thought the TV deal with FSN came before the sale, but I have slept and drank since then.

Yeah, if he's sound. "Forearm strains" and flexor tendons and biceps all give me the heebie-jeebies. I want to believe them, but often the next thing you hear is Tommy John.

It's probably unavoidable at this point. Fried is well out of the 5 year window from his first TJ. He was still pitching well so hopefully that tendon holds up through this year. If he needs TJ next year maybe we can get him for another year or two rather than losing him to free agency.

I think this upcoming team has a chance to win 107+.

We are favored to win the NL East and have the best record in the NL per BetMGM.

We are favored to win the most games in the Major Leagues per Fangraphs.

But that's not enough for this fan.

10 thoughts about the lineup:

1. Ronald Acuna will be have a monstrous bounce back year and avoid injury.
2. Austin Riley has another incredible 6 WAR season.
3. Matt Olson has his best year as a Brave. Another 6 WAR contributor with 40 bombs.
4. Sean Murphy hits .250+ with 20 bombs and puts up a 4 WAR season in a dazzling debut behind the plate in Atlanta.
5. Ozzie Albies plays 155+ games.
6. Michael Harris proves last season was no fluke as he posts another 5 WAR campaign.
7. Marcell Ozuna re-focuses and puts together his best season since he was in St. Louis.
8. Orlando Arcia has a career year at shorstop.
9. Travis d'Arnaud and Eddie Rosario are positive contributors.
10. The lineup scores more runs than any Atlanta Braves team since 2003.

10 thoughts about the pitching:

1. Soroka bounces back and secures a spot in the rotation and produces like a number 3.
2. Fried is Fried.
3. Strider leads MLB in strikeouts and wins 20 games.
4. Kyle Wright wins 20 games. Again.
5. Morton shows no signs of his age and throws another 170 innings.
6. Jimenez is dominant in what proves to be the game's best bullpen.
7. McHugh continues his good work.
8. Yates pitches 50 innings.
9. Minter stays very good.
10. Raisel Iglesias notches 50 saves.

The bottom line: You are looking at a team that can have the best lineup, the best starting rotation, and the best bullpen in the entire Major Leagues.

A team this good may be unprecedented in Atlanta sports history. In the history of the Southland.

Enjoy the ride.

Hitting

1. Check. Acuna has been as advertised. A brilliant player.

2. Miss. Riley has posted a very good 4.6 WAR, however.

3. Check. Olson has 6.1 WAR and has not only hit 40 bombs- he's hit 50 bombs.

4. Check. Murphy has exceeded my expectations and sits at 4.3 WAR.

5. Miss. Albies will end up only playing 145- games.

6. Miss. Harris will end up at 4 WAR instead of 5.

7. Check. Ozuna has been fantastic.

8. Check. Arcia was an All-Star and has been great, despite being one of our worst two hitters.

9. Half-check. d'Arnaud appears on the decline but Rosario has been a positive contributor with 1.3 WAR.

10. Check. The lineup is incredible.

Pitching

1. Miss. Yikes.

2. Check. Fried is Fried.

3. TBD. We are 2 games away from Strider getting win number 20.

4. Miss. Yikes.

5. TBD. Morton sits at 162 innings pitched.

6. Miss. Jimenez has been solid and the Braves bullpen is good, but I don't think it's the game's best.

7. Miss. McHugh's been pedestrian at best.

8. Check. 57 innings.

9. Check. Minter's been good.

10. Miss. Raisel has 29 saves and has been good, but we weren't in enough close games for 50.

Hitting: 6.5/10

Pitching: 3/8 with 2 pending.

Overall: 9.5/18 with 2 pending.

52.7% hits with 2 pending.

Considering the best minds in the world in Las Vegas rarely hit 55% winning percentages, I feel like I did a good job.

On a macro level, everything about this team was pretty much correct.

We need a strong finish to get to 105/106 wins.

Harris is unlikely to finish at 4 WAR either. 2.9 bWAR currently and 3.6 fWAR. He will still need a pretty strong finish to get 4 fWAR in only 11 remaining games and he has zero shot on bWAR.

The best minds in Vegas are mostly selecting 50/50 odds. You simply listed a bunch of random predictions, which at least half contained no statistical basis for. And you didn't exactly go out on a limb on many of the others. You predicted Ronnie to have a monster year... Oh you mean like everyone else in baseball? He had the 4th best odds to win the NL MVP before the season started.

Still counts.

Please remember I coined "The Venezuelan Trout" as well
