Baseball Game Thread for Wednesday 26 of July

They need Cease.

That's the guy I was thinking of with my suggestion that they go big and build a deal around Elder, Grissom, and others for someone in the Cease strata. Don't know if the White Sox would do that, but Anthopoulos has shown that he will expand deals and Cease would be a sensible target.

To your points about Strider, he reminds me a lot of young Bert Blyleven, who I watched a lot of in the early-1970s up here in Minny. Great stuff that can be almost unhittable, but it just seems that whenever he makes a mistake, he doesn't get away with it.

With Giolito now gone, would the White Sox do kind of a start over and deal Cease? Don’t know. Grissom and Elder would probably be a start, but what else would Chicago want is the factor. That’s where the Braves could run into an issue IF Cease is even available. I would deal him if I was the White Sox, but who knows what they’re thinking

Through June and most of July, we found out what it looks like when the whole team is clicking. Now, we see regression to the mean. Frustrating, but no big deal overall.

And for those concerned, the Braves still have over 99% chance to make the playoffs and win the division, per Fangraphs and Baseball Reference.

You hit on the obstacles. Cease's availability is unknown and I don't know if the White Sox would take quantity over quality in adding pieces beyond Elder and Grissom. I didn't think the White Sox would collapse the way they have and maybe their front office thinks this season is an aberration.

Cease has been my main target. He has 3 more years of control and can hit 100. Dude is good. Instead of Elder they may want AJSS instead. Grissom and Shawver would be a strong 2 to put in a package and then probably a couple of filler pieces. I highly doubt Fried is coming back after next year so that would give AA a replacement and not have to go the FA route to do it. Just seems like an AA move. Strider, Cease, and Fried in the playoffs would be hard to beat.

I think that's a factor that gets left out of a lot of thinking. Anthopoulos may have to settle for a rental if he makes any deadline deal, but I think he wants to maximize the chances with the core he's assembled and do it without having to go heavily into free agency (and likely overpay). Cease fits that thinking to a tee. The White Sox may want Smith-Shawver and not Elder, as you say, and with Grissom you have the start to a deal the White Sox might take. My concern is that if there is a bidding war for Cease, will we have enough ammo to match the Dodgers and other teams with more minor league depth.

The Sox have said they are not dealing Cease... and why would they. He has 3 years of control after this season. Are they even looking at a long term rebuild?? I don't know their team well but I don't see the point in trading a controlable asset away with 3 years of control. I not sure AJSS and Grisom would be enough to entice either. I just don't see that happening unfortunately.

Tim Anderson is a FA after next year and their farm isn’t loaded or anything so if an enticing offer came along they may be interested. If AA is gonna trade his top guys they won’t be for a rental. They’ll have some control.

Those percentages as of today mean nothing. Remember 2011? I do.

They do mean something. But just look at how 2021 and 2022 went for the Braves. At one point they had very low % to win the world series and division respectively. But barring a total collapse, the Braves should be comfortably division winners.
