my perhaps overly simplistic take is that voters in those states (the ones passing pro-choice referenda) like their conservative governors but in spite of not because of the positions on abortion...i believe signatures are being gathered for a referendum in Florida...i think those kinds of referenda will continue to pass even in red states...and those states will continue to vote by and large for conservative candidates for governor and other offices
He still doesn't get what a terrible strategic decision it is to run a national campaign on more stringent abortion positions.
The correct LONG term play is to allow the states to sort it out for themselves and continue to educate the population on the horrors of abortion.
