GDT 8/30/23: Braves @ Rockies - 30/60 Attempt 2

Hate to keep beating a dead Murphy but tonight / next four days will be telling. This is objectively a critical series with major implications for home field. Murphy had a day off yesterday

There is zero excuse for Murphy not to be in there 3 of 4. Literally zero. TD has been ass the last two months, and it’s a crucial series. If it’s 2 of 4 this series I will be re-escalating my concerns that TD will be starting major playoff games over Murphy.

Agreed. and with renown speedster Freddie Freeman on the horizon, we need our best catcher to throw him out.

I questioned the Riggy move last when I got to watch. Why would we use him up by 4 when he pitched the night before. No reason Yates or another low leverage couldn’t close that out.

Wait til enscheff gets here with the pitch data tomorrow. He’s not gonna like that fastball at all, although Vines located it very well. He might like that change up, though. It had depth and deception. MLB ready pitch, I think.

I don't even bother with guys who are very clearly AAAA fodder. If anyone was fooled by last night nothing I can post will help them.

Now I'm going to just sound like I'm complaining but I just realized as missed end of game. Did we really go with iglesias for back to back nights against one of the worst teams in baseball, with a 4 run lead, no days off and a 4 game series coming up that could determine home field advantage? Those are the types of basic things that are just unacceptable to me, regardless of what our division lead is. Literally just moronic. For people that say we aren't allowed to complain about our manager because we are the best team in baseball, this to me was actually an offensive move - even if iglesias hadn't pitched the night before, I'd say its stupid. But to go back to back days in that scenario is actually just comical.

Snit routinely makes unacceptable tactical mistakes. He is not a competent tactician (the usual suspects will once again confuse "tactician" with "manager"), and talent/luck has to overcome that incompetence. The Braves are in a dogfight with the Dodgers, and are about to be outmanaged by them yet again. Hopefully the Braves can overcome the 2-3 tactical mistakes he will make this weekend.

The response you will get is, "do you want him to manage every night like the playoffs?". No, I want him to manage competently every single night...because that's his job. And the best roster in MLB deserves to be piloted by a competent tactician.

Yep. I'm not even sure how someone could defend throwing Iglesias in the 9th there. I'm sure Snit will say 'its Coors field, so a 4 run lead is like a 1 run lead.' But I would agree that its a completely indefensible decision given how the schedule lays out and the importance of the next four days. You've backed yourself into a corner where you have to give Iglesias a day off today or tomorrow, and if he throws today you're increasing the risk that he's ineffective.

I wasn't worried about the move. You win the game now that is in your hand and worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

agree, but with a 4 run lead against one of the worst teams, you don't have to throw one of your best guys just because it is the 9th inning and nobody knows how to get outs in the 9th except Riggy. Not sure why Yates just wasn't extended. I don't want to see him in the Dodger'$ series anyways.

Yeah- I’m pretty sure Snit wanted to get that win for Vines and his family. And every player in that dugout would agree with that decision.

pretty short sighted and stupid if that really is the reason. Putting one players win over the betterment of the entire team/season is idiotic. potentially loosing Riggy for 1-2 games in what could be a tight series that might dictate HFA is way more important than one kids special moment.

And I still go back to trusting the team that was built to win. Riggy is not the only guy who can get outs in the 9th innning. Pently of talent to get out those rocky hitters.

Go camping already.

I think at this stage of the game Snit and the Braves are managing more with strategy than tactics. There are alot of players on the 40 man roster that need evaluation (Bullpen especially) as we head into the playoffs. We need to see them in ideal and unideal situations. Some players could use extra reps others could use to be protected a bit more.

This is a time in our season where it makes sense to run suboptimal a bit so we can collect valuable data on who can help us most and how without putting much risk on the fortunes of the team.

Who exactly do the Braves need to collect data about?

Iggy in the 9th?

Vines who will never see a playoff game?

Rosario vs LHP?

No additional info needs to be gathered about any of those guys. This is a top contender for a championship with known players in every single roster slot, not some rebuilt team emerging from an incubator.
