GDT 9/17/23: Braves @ Marlins - Albies leads off

This outing exemplifies the issue many Braves pitchers have: if an opponent is willing to wait them out, they end up pitching behind in the count all the time. Add in a borderline call that goes against them, and an inning can spiral out of control without the hitters having to do much. We have very few pitchers who can get outs with quality strikes. Most rely on opposing hitters being willing to expand their zone.

The results don‘t matter. But these games did highlight the soft spots of this team that could be exploited by postseason opponents.

I mean, Charlie‘s control issues aren‘t a one-off issue. They could become a real problem in the playoffs. Same for the occasional bullpen meltdowns where they are collectively unable to stop the bleeding.

This series has no impact on expected playoff performance, but allowing 29 (+) runs in three games to a team that can’t really hit is insane

Think about it. A team you obliterate 9 of 10, suddenly you give up huge innings left and right in three straight to keep them in the playoff race? The possibility is there.

With the way it stnads now. Marlins are going to leap fron Cincy for the 4th WC spot. And after the Cubs/DBacks game tonight they would either be tied with Cubs for 3rd or a half game ahead of hte Dbacks for 3rd depending on how that game goes.

A Phillies/Marlins series in the first round isn't out of the question.

I dunno man. 3 games vs 140+ hard to say which is real

What you did the first 140 games means nothing if your pitchers are tanked. Never worried about the offense. But our pitching the last week or two has been awful. Is it a sign of over work, injuries, rough patch, bad luck. I am not saying which it is. Just that I hope it is a rough patch.

This series is an embarrassment. If they don't take it to a whole new level this week, I'm gonna be pissed

Braves are 26th in the league in ERA since sept 1st. BP alone is 27th. Pitching has been a huge concern and it has been for a few weeks. We all hope it is just a blip but I am still worried.

Pitching will be AA’s big focus come the offseason. I could see him making a play for Hader to have an elite arm in the bullpen. Iglesias is a notch below imo. A lot of dead weight will be cut in the bp.

That focus won’t help in this year’s playoffs. Wish AA could have gotten someone legit in a trade. This band-aid bullpen and the last month free fall is a major concern before the games really count.

Nothing like a blow out sweep of the Phils to help us forget about this series.

I have a feeling the Braves kick their ass, but we do give up a ton more runs in late innings as Snit continues to experiment. They honestly needed to get out of Miami and just take up. It happens.

Travis said something about it the other day, and as much as we want to say it shouldn't happen, it does...

“I think with any emotional series, it’s a common thing,” Travis d’Arnaud said of a potential letdown following the clincher.
