GDT 10/12/23: Braves @ Phillies - NLDS Game 4 Striders Revenge

Tough and unfortunate way to go out. Guys just didn't perform. Not much to say, they just didn't get it done. We had Strider vs. their three starter... twice.... we gave up 3 runs in both games... and we lose both games. That's just not good enough.

Shame as it was an unbelievable regular season. That's just baseball. Limited correlation in playoffs.

Just sucks as Braves fans, even if its random, that I think we've now lost like 11 of last 12 first round match-ups excluding COVID and 11 of 13 including it... that's just so bad, it takes like extreme math to have that degree play out. Unfortunate as a fan of a team that's had that performance

Now I'll take move my frustrations to a bad saints team that plays bad. I can handle that better than a good team that plays bad when the lights come on.

Sucks that it's the same team, two straight years. And it wasn't luck... just total domination in both series

Braves were 28 games better last two years over 324 games.

Humiliated in the division series after the bye

Throw out the rest of the BS. Why was there an off day between games 1 and 2? This is specifically there so the WC round winner can setup their pitching staff how they want.

After game 1 their entire staff should’ve been pitching on short rest.

When have they ever had nights off in the playoffs when the teams weren’t traveling?

Braves played 4 games in 11 days following the end of the regular season

No...we will be hoping fckn AJSS can be our #2 but AA feels reliable pitching is a dime a dozen...this is a fckn wake up call for the front office....un**** this pitching

How did you watch that series and believe the pitching was the problem?

Well, we had the matchup we wanted twice 1 vs 3 and lost both. Not winning a series like that. Go to 4 divisions after expansion top 2 teams in each division get in with no byes all series best of seven.

Two games with our ace against their bullpen game.

We scored 1 run

Credit to them for executing their game plan. Unfortunate timing with a couple injuries to Fried & Morton (enjoy retirement buddy). However, the offense (sans Riley) was putrid .

Last 3 innings in Game 2: 5 runs.
Other 32 innings: 3 runs.

Absolutely awful.

It was only the NLDS that got days off between G1 and G2 this year. That's because of TV money.

Traditionally it was

Rotated every year:

Day 1:
ALDS Game 1

Day 2:
ALDS Game 2
NLDS Game 1

Day 3
NLDS Game 2
ALDS (Off)

Day 4
ALDS Game 3
NLDS (off)

Day 5
ALDS Game 4 (if necessary)
NLDS Game 3

Day 6
ALDS Game 5 (if necessary)
NLDS Game 4 (if necessary)

Day 7
NLDS Game 5

Day 8
ALCS Game 1

etc etc.

For whatever reason, they decided to start all four LDS series the same day. Which means Day 2 you had to give two LDS series off so Day 3 had baseball still. Allows maximum amount of primetime games.

I know people are mad. So am I. Take a few days. Vent the frustration. Then get over it. We won the world series less than 5 years ago. We can't win it every year. The same reason that Braves team won is the same reason this Braves team lost. The playoffs are a crapshoot. We were the best team in 2023. The Phillies were better than us one week in October. Facts of life. All we can do is put together the best team possible. The only thing we should be looking at now is creating a playoff team not a regular season team. That means 4 and 5 starters aren't needed. We need just a couple high end relievers since they can pitch every game. Don't get caught up in all the choking nonsense. The 3 best teams all lost in the DS. It wasn't just us. All that choking nonsense is sports media BS. You don't help the situation by whining about it.

Ask yourself if deep down, you didn’t see it coming this way.
As of now, 2020 and 2021 were merely the exceptions in a 2+ decade consistent trend.

This is a team that is build very well for postseason play- on paper. Two front-line starters. An offense that can put up runs in bunches without relying on 1-2 superstars being hot at the right time. A deep pen (albeit not super dominant).
The reason the Braves are again watching from home is between the ears, in my opinion. They are mentally unprepared for a real championship run. When I watch them, I see a bunch of kids who just like to go out and have fun. Talented, but naive. When I watch the Phillies, I see men who expect to win.

The playoff format surely played a role. But the layoff is not enough to explain why they are still this flat in game 4. The main reason they lost is not injury or other circumstances, but that the biggest strength turned into the biggest weakness. 8 runs. Nothing more needs to be said.
