School Choice II

PORTLAND, Ore. — Students in the Portland Public Schools district will be out of the classroom for the rest of the week, with no deal reached between administrators and the union Wednesday night.

It’s unfortunate Oregon doesn’t have school choice. Students/parents held hostage by public schools in a state where basic reading, writing, and math competency isn’t required for graduation.

Students in Portland, Oregon, could be entering a third week of canceled classes next week as a teachers strike that began more than a week ago shows little signs of relenting.

The Portland Association of Teachers has kept schools in the city closed as they negotiate with Portland Public Schools over a new collective bargaining contract. But in addition to the standard demands of higher pay and better working conditions, the union has included racial justice professional development training in its list of demands.

"Portland’s students need educators who have time for planning and preparation," the union said in its list of demands."Educators deserve professional development that is led by educators that addresses critical topics like racial equity and implicit bias. Educators deserve salaries and benefits that mean they can afford to live in the neighborhoods where they and their students live."

Former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos ripped the teachers unions in a statement to the Washington Examiner, saying, "Big school unions love closing schools."

"They’re holding nearly 50,000 kids hostage to their radical demands, and families across Portland are paying the price," she said. "This is on top of Oregon recently removing basic math and reading competency requirements to graduate high school. It’s hard to argue kids are getting a great education there, and it’s a shame parents in Portland who want better for their kids can’t 'strike' themselves and take their kids out of the government schools."

Is there any question that 57 supports the teachers here?

PORTLAND, Ore. — Teachers will be ineligible for health insurance for December if classes don't resume Thursday, Portland Public Schools (PPS) said Wednesday.

The teachers strike in Portland Public Schools is into its third week. If students aren't back in school Thursday, that will mark 10 days without instruction.

According to PPS, teachers would not be eligible for insurance in December because they will have worked less than half the days they’re contracted to work in November.

Instead, teachers will have to apply for COBRA insurance. That's led some teachers to become increasingly stressed.

"I was expecting to not have to deal with that right now," said Camila Arze, a teacher at McDaniel High School.

Arze is a mother of three young children, including a 4-year-old who recently had brain surgery.

"We are dependent on those benefits that it gives us,” Arze said. "You know, it's a big stress."

Julia Kirkpatrick, an English teacher at Grant High School, said she's "feeling scared."

Like Arze, Kirkpatrick just had a baby. She also takes insulin for Type 1 diabetes.

"So, for me, the district's decision to try and use our access to health care as a bargaining tactic is actually life or death," Kirkpatrick said.

Should prb get back to work then

They aren’t “using them”.

That’s the rules of the healthcare contract and carrier. Sorry you weren’t prepared for it

Vouchers don’t help poor kids — they just help rich parents..

who already send their kids to private school.

I asked if Greg Abbott’s voucher scam would give $80,000 to wealthy CEOs.

The answer was YES.

Since private schools are so “unaccountable,” surely this (D) state representative sends his kids to an accountable public school, right? Wrong!

LOL. Hypocrisy knows no bounds. As it has been for 10 years - "Do as I say, not as I do" OR "For me but not for thee"

The lefts messages all fall apart when hit with a harsh dose of reality.

They’re working hard to keep the riffraff out of the private schools their own kids attend. Can’t have little Johnny sitting next to (gasp!) a poor kid
