Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

People are ragging on the Dodgers, but I seriously doubt they would have gone that high without having at least a pretty good feeling that he'll be able to pitch again.

Dude is on his 2nd TJ surgery before the age of 30 and pitches with a high velocity. If he does pitch he wont be the same

I would feel so much better if AA would go ahead and sign or trade for a decent middle-of-the-rotation starter before the market takes off. That is very literally the only real flaw in the Braves roster. The bench is pretty ass, but that’s less important at this junction.

Fletch, Grissom, Wall and TDA isnt the best but Snit never plays them so how big of a deal is it anyway? But agree we need to add a starter before the market goes crazy.

Enscheff and a few others and I got vilified because we wanted another starter at the deadline. It's not about questioning boy wonder(AA), but you could see the need coming from a mile away. I think he has another starter in mind and say..go get him. It is time.

I just don't want to lose Waldrep, Benitez, Glod, Tavarez, Guanipa or AJSS. There. Should be easy 😂😂

I think we could get someone w/o parting with those above, but dont know if they'd be a ton better than Elder lol. I cant really blame him for not getting someone at the deadline. Because the guys that were dealt, dont tilt the series vs Philly. Problem was like in 22, we couldnt hit.

Hindsight, Montgomery would have been a nice get at the deadline. Can't remember what the comparable package would have been, though.

Not sure AA would have beaten Texas' offer. Monty's like the only who would maybe would have made a difference and i dont totally blame AA on that.

I don’t want to trade any of them either - not for a number three rental. If we wanna field a winning team that is in contention for a long time, then we are going to need to develop guys like Strider and Fried from our system. Can’t do that by trading them away. And if we want to have any shot of re-signing our MVP to a long term extension in another year or two, we can’t be bloating our future payroll now with a way overpriced FA. So all that typed, I think we are done. I mean we certainly could go out tomorrow and trade away our potential future aces and deepen our rotation - but October baseball is so fluke ridden (see us, and LAD, and Baltimore just last year) I’d hate to focus too damn much on that for a brief period in lieu of a maximally extended window. We need a pitcher for October in August ? Fine - go get one- but we just may have more than we need in the above group. And we have the unique luxury of having a lineup that’s so damn good that we can debut these guys and give them a real audition and time to learn on the job.
Right ?

But in the end, the team didn't hit.

This FA class is strong in the one thing this Braves roster lacks…a #3 SP. There’s really no reason AA shouldn’t be able to get one.

If he spent $50M on a BP full of 7th inning guys and that means he doesn’t have the cash for another SP, that was a mistake. If he spent all this money to eventually build this terrible bench and can’t afford another SP, that was a mistake.

The cash was there to fix LF and add a SP. I find it hard to believe AA isn’t going to get it done.

Yeah, in 4 playoff games, we had fried and strider with 2 of those game being strider vs pen game.
Therein is the problem. I still don't want to count on just those two. It was the same argument for why a move WASN'T made. I do trust AA to remedy that 3 spot because I believe he thinks that the same playoff failure can't exist...hitting be damned. It really is a catch 22. I don't want to gut the farm..but it needs to hurt to get the guy we want. Whomever that is.

What’s the point of the Luxury tax if teams can get around it by deferring money?
Just have it or not.
Such a stupid rule.
Any big market team is going to make a point to abuse it and save on the tax.
I know supposedly the Phillies have done it last year with Harper as have the Mets with Diaz.

I wonder if the Braves are also skirting the luxury tax rules by putting all these guys on the 40-man with two-way contracts. That's murky to me and I honestly don't know how the rules will be applied in this instance. Are those guys counted as league minimum (or slightly above in some cases) or when they get sent out to Gwinnett will their salary be carried as a lower amount for luxury tax purposes.

You weren’t vilified, it was like me saying we need to upgrade on Rosario in LF so let’s trade for Mike Trout.

Sure it woulda been great, but a long shot

The move to make, if the trade price is just too crazy, is to grab one of these free agent starters on a reasonable deal. That should not be difficult to accomplish. You make the move now because you inevitably will have another need in the summer that you’re not anticipating. There is going to be at least one injury, and at least a couple of guys will underperform.

That analogy is terrible 😂😂 and although we remember different...the point stands. There were plenty of posts saying the Braves were fine. AA himself said they were close to a deal but it fell through. The need was there. All that to say...AA knows there is a solid SP needed not just for regular season...but for POSTSEASON. If Elder is starting in the postseason...color me uninspired.
