2025 Trade Deadline Thread

This is exactly the type of interest that Murphy should have, which is why it was always so odd to see people here describe him as part of the problem this year now that he’s finally healthy. Who knows how long that health lasts, so if Murphy can get a contributor for 2026 the deal needs to happen.

Murphy plus cash plus a BP arm might be close to that Rays SS.

Murphy alone should be enough for the Padres SS prospect.

Leo de Vries is in A ball, but he's currently the No. 3 overall prospect on MLB.com. He'll be harder to pull than Williams, imo.

Ok then maaaaybe not him.

The point about Murphy’s value, and the only scenario it makes sense to trade him, stands.

Its crazy to me that it has come to this with Acuna coming back hitting like Aaron Judge, both Baldwin/Murphy giving elite production at catcher and Olson having a good year. When a team is contending they pay a premium for elite production because theres only so many positions and they have few if any glaring holes. When a team has as many holes as we do we need several good players not 1 or 2 elite ones. Murphys value is peaking. We need to take advantage of this. We need to fill spots on next years team with cheap players and both the Rays and Padres have players/prospects I think can help the team quickly. Its hard for me to gauge Murphys value right now so just gonna make a wish list for both teams.

For the Padres I will assume De Vries is off the table although their gm is a wildcard and with their payroll issues I guess its possible. Kash Mayfield and Humberto Cruz are two good pitchers in A ball. Mayfield I like a lot and Cruz less so but would love to get both. Mayfield as a headliner of a trade would be great although he doesnt fit my criteria. Henry Baez RHP in AA. I see him listed as their 12th best prospect. Lukewarm on him but could help next year out of the pen. Bradley Rodriguez RH closer prospect I really like. Must get in any trade imo. Then give him the rest of the season to see if he can fill the closer spot. I cant emphasize how big that would be for the team. Rodriguez wouldnt even be arb eligible until 2029. Our pen isnt even that bad it just lacks a dominant closer and a third good lefty and it would be elite again. Tyson Neighbors is another RH closer prospect. Not nearly as fond of him as Rodriguez and not sure he would even be ready in 2026. Francis Pena is another RH reliever prospect already at AAA. Low end guy that I wouldnt mind getting for depth. They have some other cheap relievers already established I assume they wont trade. I like Gavin Sheets if they would trade him. Still 2 years of team control after 2025. Can play LF some. Mayfield plus Rodriguez would be my starting price and hopefully we could squeeze a few more of the other players out of them too.

For the Rays I will assume Fairbanks wont be traded until the offseason and Carson Williams is off the table. I like Tre Morgan a plus hit tool 1B/LF prospect with below average power. Should put up a good OBP atleast. Brody Hopkins is a good RH SP prospect in AA that imo fits the Braves mold. Kind of old for AA though. Dominic Keegan is a RHH Catcher prospect at AAA. He is a bat first prospect and the Rays are very big on defense at catcher. Thus why they would trade him to get Murphy. For us we get a cheap backup catcher for Baldwin. He is good enough with the bat to get playing time at DH or 1B but lacks the power you traditionally want from the position. Yoniel Curet is a RH SP in AA with great stuff. Very much a lottery ticket arm. They got 2 young SS prospects in the mid minors Gregory Barrios and Adrian Santana and we desperately need some SS prospects. Ian Seymour is a LHP prospect I really like. He would be a must have in any deal for me. He is a changeup dominant lefty. I like having a reverse splits lefty in the pen so dumb managers play the wrong matchups. Ty Johnson is another RHP at AA I like. Good FB/Slider combo with fringy changeup that will be likey the difference between starting and relieving. Could be good reliever quickly with his 2 pitch combo. Joe Rock is a LHRP at AAA who just reached the majors. Command and third pitch not good enough to start. Could be quality lefty reliever. Hopkins/Keegan/Seymour would be my dream scenario. Even better if we could get one of those mid tier SS prospects or anyone else I mentioned as well.

I kind of wish we could trade Murphy to both of them. I really like Rodriguez and Seymour and want to get both. I know people will hate on trading for reliever prospects but filling the pen with good cheap arms allows us to spend big in other areas.

If we can't get a legit guy to step in next year then just hang onto Murphy and he can help us at DH and C. Murphy is a top 5 catcher on both offense and defense signed for 3 years at a good price and that's extremely valuable so quantity over quality shouldn't even be on the table. If somebody won't give up a top 3 player in their farm system that is a position of need then move on or just keep him.
