2025 Trade Deadline Thread

Yeah that's a dice you may have to roll with at C though. I love Murph and would only trade him for a legit upgrade. The Cards are a WC bc they may want Wetherholt at SS long term but won't trade Winn in the middle of the season while competing. De Vries is probably the most available bc the Pads are competing and he's far enough away that he won't be helping them this year or next year either. Murphy would immediately help the Pads.

I don’t want a guy who isn’t helping next year though

De Vries might be the exception—Top 40 overall guy, hitting pretty well at A+ at only 18, switch hitter, decent power, great BB rate, only Ks 20%, though his BAs leave a little to be desired thus far.

He's rated the #3 prospect in baseball. He won't help next year but he could be ready in 27. The goal for trading Murphy is to get the best prospect you can.

I certainly see why it makes sense to trade Murphy, but man, it's hard for me to break up what's almost certainly 4 FWAR in 2026 even if one gets hurt.
Yes, there is a pretty narrow set of circumstances where it makes sense for a contender to trade a good player with multiple years of affordable control. That trade very likely doesn’t exist, at which point I hope AA holds.

Anyone speculating on names is just guessing, but the types of names being through around make sense.

If there is any probability of getting Devries, you do it. He's that good. I'd wait 2 years for him.

The only reason I say he's more attainable is bc 1. it's SD and they aren't the brightest and 2. They are in win now mode and Murphy would help them chase down the Dodgers and De Vries won't help them either for 2 years so they may want the immediate help.

Just going by FG, which is the only site I follow for prospects, they have him as a solid but unspectacular player in the majors. Because he’s so young, he could really go either way still. It’s not a bad bet that he’ll blow up and project as more of a star than he does right now.

There are a bunch of 50FV SS on FG’s list. McGonigle is intriguing, but not sure if Detroit is happy enough with Dingler at catcher. I have to assume Wetherholt is untouchable otherwise I’d go after him first. Would love him or Winn. Match up with St Louis well, just maybe not timing-wise

The Cards are our best match up but like Super said the timing may just be bad. The Cards may view Wetherholt as their long term guy but they aren't gonna trade Winn wile in the playoff hunt. In the offseason I think they'd be willing to trade Winn but not now. TB with Williams and the Padres with DV are probably the 2 best bets to trade Murphy and get a long term difference maker at SS. We do need a SS long term but I wouldn't limit myself to that position just for the sake of it in trade discussions.

The Cards may be playing themselves out of contention. Outside of a great May that saw them go 19-8, they have been very mediocre. And obviously we just took 2 of 3 from them. And if not for the heart of our order shitting the bed in the 9th inning of game 3, we would have swept them.

They could do a bit of a reset at the deadline without actually selling. Trade us Winn for Murphy and a reliever or 2. Then promote Wetherholt. Would obvisouly be a risk for them going with a rookie in a playoff chase, but considering WInn's offense has been mediocre this year, it could be move that potentially upgraded SS and Catcher substantially for them.

Yeah I thought Winn was down on offense this year. He was almost a 5 war player last year and is controlled through 2030 so he's still pretty valuable.

They're a team without much of a margin for error. They don't really have a star player on offense, but they are fairly solid on offense as a whole outside of a lack of power. Pitching is average.

People sleep on how valuable Murphy is sometimes and the contract he's on. The dude has a lot of value. If we were approached by the Cards I'd either ask for Winn and the #98 ranked catching prospect Rainiel Rodriguez or Wetherholt by himself. I think you have to get a prospect back with Winn.
