I could certainly see Freeman glide-pathing to retirement with a few seasons where he looks like Mark Grace. He's the kind of guy who can always put bat to ball, and guys who can do that and have good eyes will always be able to draw a fair number of walks, even without power. That won't be...

Is it really that hard to say, "You know, I thought it was the right call at the time. Romero made a difficult pitch, Luis tried his best, and it kind of backfired on us. It happens?"

Bill had several sock puppets, but it was OK, because Bill himself was a sock puppet for Metaphysicist. Who was, himself, a sock puppet for Julio3000.

Horacio Ramirez was one of those guys about whom we would get into knock down, drag out fights with Bill Shanks. Bill really didn't like talk about Horacio's K/BB ratios.

Why in Keith Lockhart's name did John Boland Schuerholz Jr trade Jermaine Dye away?

You know, it's funny, I've never really lamented the Wainwright-Drew trade too much. It was objectively terrible, of course, but Drew was so good in 2004. It was a genuine thrill to watch him that year, and I'm glad I had that opportunity.

I wish there was some word to describe the unpleasant experience of watching Aaron Bummer pitch.

Why in Keith Lockhart's name did John Boland Schuerholz Jr trade Jermaine Dye away?

I was 13 years old at the time of the trade, but I think there might have been a sense that Dye was a really raw young player who wouldn't have the chance to fully develop on a stacked roster with World Series aspirations every year. Tucker was older, a bit more polished, a bit more seasoned...

Langford walking away without getting thrown out must have required a truly extraordinary exertion of willpower.

I think the takeaway from all of this is that sports betting is dumb and no one should do it. Now, granted, I drink Mountain Dew and that's definitely dumb and absolutely no one should do that, so I don't judge people on their vices, but still.

It's all pretty ridiculous, yes, but I don't see any reason to believe that the US Attorney is conducting some kind of cover up for Ohtani, and I very seriously doubt that the Ohtani team is capable of creating a smokescreen so elaborate that it could fool the federal government.

Can I just say, I love how many times in this story I’ve heard or read the phrase “Orange County bookie.” You hear “bookie” and you think of some cigar-chomping tough guy from 1940’s LA or New York. But Mizuhara got caught up with a bookie operating on the mean streets of Laguna Beach.

The Fick discussion shook loose a faded memory of his post-Braves career, and I ran it down on Wikipedia. The 2006 Nationals had both Fick and Matthew LeCroy on their roster, and LeCroy got pressed into service as starting catcher in a game where the team's starting and backup catchers were both...

Fick had a nice first half that year -- .296/.354/.482. We were kind of excited about him at the time. But boy howdy was that a rough second half of the season.

Love the catcher gently restraining the hitter from doing something really bad and commiserating with him about the call.
