2024 Minor League Thread

Mejia is having a good season at Miss. Is he a real prospect?

11th round pick in 2022 out of New Mexico State. Braves went below slot on him (I had him mixed up with De Grandpre who they went over slot for) and signed him for $100,000. Hasn't done much to this point and I was a bit surprised when he started in Mississippi this year although he pitched pretty well in Rome last season (great control numbers). Mets drafted him in the 35th round out of high school and Mejia red-shirted as a freshman at the University of Arizona, transferred to Pima (AZ) CC and pitched one year there. Moved on to New Mexico State where he pitched two seasons.

Hard to know where he sits in the prospect universe. Hasn't been on the Braves' Top 30 and he's 24, but if he finds something he could move up. Looks to be making a positive step, but it's a small sample size.

Horacio Ramirez was one of those guys about whom we would get into knock down, drag out fights with Bill Shanks. Bill really didn't like talk about Horacio's K/BB ratios.

With the caveat that I bought his book much more so for the Braves Prospect profiles, I still have some retroactive embarrassment going on that I did in fact purchase the book.

Do you think he harbors similar feelings for having written it?

No… Bill Shanks loves and has always loved everything Bill Shanks has ever done.

Who was the weird Shanks alter ego board runner there for a while? Like some old dude Uncle Jerry or something… still pretty sure it was just actually Shanks

Mejia is not unlike a few pitchers in the Braves system in that, there will be times he's good to ok and mostly ok (so far). His FB seems to top out at about 93-ish, but it does have some rise to it. Some say it can get up to 97...meh. I haven't seen that a lot, but I've only seen him twice. I think he throws a slider that he can get hitters out with and his FB plays up because of it. He is a competitive dude though. I like that about him. Short story, I like him ok, and he could be one of the pitchers that last years in the majors as a reliever because of that spin on the SL and his competitive nature. Future prognosis: Cloudy with a chance of sunshine. He's around the 25-30 area of prospects if I were ranking. (Which means nothing...lol)

Nothing wrong with buying his book. I bought and read it. It was a good read. The theory the book was selling didnt turn out great in hindsight but it was still a good read.

OF Kadon Morton was one of our late round overslot picks in 2019, same draft they went overslot late on Vaughn Grissom, Jared Johnson, Tyler Owens and a few others. It hasn't worked at all for Morton as an outfielder, but it looks like he's going to try pitching. He started today in the complex league and had an impressive line: 4IN, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K.

Well, he does know a lot about strikeouts.

I believe he was a fairly highly-recruited QB out of high school. If that's the case, there's probably some arm strength. I wish him the best.

All athlete. Has a good arm. Maybe..just maybe..but we haven't done all that well with conversions over the last few years.

AjSS continues his bad start to this season. Gotta wonder if the braves broke him by rushing him
This is in no way an "I told you so," but watching him in the minors..it just seemed like a rush job. Fk the trend...develop the player. He's got talent but he needed time. I said it then..and now. He'll be ok though.
