    4/10 GDT: Reds game 1

Albies is going to be a .650-.700 OPS guy who plays reasonable defense. He just needs to be dropped down to the 9 hole in the lineup. At this point you have to hope you get out of Arcia what you wanted from Albies and vice versa. Murphy/d'Arnaud (when he's back) need to hit 5&6 with Harris...

Wonder how much decreased game time would cut into concession spend? Assuming a relative straight line spend (which I don't think you can really do) and an average spend of $30 per person (just a WAG) and 30K attending per night over 81 games that would result in about $73M in concession spend...

Sorry about CLV. We didn't agree on much but he was someone who would put things out even though he knew he would likely be attacked for it (sometimes rightly so). He stood by his convictions. And he had some good takes at times IMO. Hope he gets a luncheon with Neikro and the Hammer.

GDT March 5 - Charlie and almost the full lineup!

Yeah, I agree. It's always a gamble. You just have to try to better the odds if you can. The Braves DO look likely to be competitive over the next 4 years given luck, especially on the everyday player side of the ledger. But if anything, anything, goes wrong then your likely having to dig into...

GDT March 5 - Charlie and almost the full lineup!

The concern is sustainability, continuation of the competitive window. When you get to the top of the mountain, you have to have waves of talent, each wave situated strategically on the developmental curve (Rookie, Low/High A, AA/AAA), or be ready to spend at all costs, or some version of the...

A holistic view should be applied to a franchise each year. This should include where a team is on talent at both the ML and miL, where the team is in regards to contention, how committed you are to capturing a trophy, how committed you are to maintaining a competitive window, etc. I personally...

GDT 11/2/21: Braves @ Astros - World Series Game 6

I was wrong. Glad to be. Go Braves. They could not have done it without Freddie. All know my position there. They proved me wrong. Wow

    Trades/acquisitions

I get it. It would be a gamble of sorts. However, after 2022, Hosmer is only owed $13M per year and the Braves routinely sign guys in that range that don't work out too well. IF Hosmer doesn't work out (ie. give you 1.5-2 WAR yearly) then your margin for error certainly shrinks. I think it's a...

    Trades/acquisitions

Hosmer replaces Freeman at 1B. Sure, you lose Freemans 4-6 WAR and replace with Hosmer's 1-3. No question a downgrade. But you expect to gain WAR through the talent returned in trade AND the ability to apply the financial difference between what you are paying Hosmer versus what you would be...

    Trades/acquisitions

It's about value. If you can get a Dansby replacement (Abrams) (saves you roughly $10M after 2022) and a Ozuna replacement (Hassell) (saves you roughly $13M at some point) then paying Hosmer $13M per year in 2023 is certainly preferable than paying Freeman $25M in 2023. You've theoretically...

    Trades/acquisitions

How would everyone feel about a Freeman for Hosmer, Abrams and Hassell trade? Yes Hosmer is an albatross. I said that when he was a FA. However, in 2022 he's owed $20M, then in 23, 24, 25 he's at $13M each. Can he be a 1.5WAR guy in 23, 24, 25? If so, the real outlier is 22. BUT, if you re-sign...

    Trades/acquisitions

Would you go to Vegas and play a game where the house tilt or edge is 75%? Blackjack is 1-2%, Craps is about 1.5-5%, slots 3-20%. For a 5% house edge you should expect to lose a nickel for every dollar you have over time. There IS always the possibility of hitting it big which keeps people...

    Braves trade for Joc Pederson

Braves just spent $2+M and a fringe prospect for a below replacement level player who can't play everyday. Yep. Everything's fixed.

    Trades/acquisitions

I agree completely. You can't lose Acuna, while struggling for half a season to cross .500, and trade for enough to overcome Acuna's loss AND fill all the holes that led you to below .500 anyway. That doesn't even count the likely loss of Anderson. Trading what's left of the farm to be the...
