GDT 8/7/23: Pirates @ Bravos - Time to hit our STRIDEr

He's clearly been very unlucky. But you can feel a change in him once cruise control gets shut off. It gets to him when hitters suddenly are able to foul off 4-5 pitches. It gets to him when the ump misses a call. It gets to him when weak contact falls for a hit. That's all natural for a young...

GDT 8/7/23: Pirates @ Bravos - Time to hit our STRIDEr

Also, Strider is puzzling me. For much of the season, he's been unable to stop the bleeding once he runs into trouble. Some of that is certainly bad luck / sequencing, but it often feels like he gets the jitters once a couple of runners reach, loses control of his pitches and in turn loses part...

GDT 8/7/23: Pirates @ Bravos - Time to hit our STRIDEr

I agree when talking about pure physical ability. However, it's also a roster with a fairly low baseball IQ, and that extends to the manager. That becomes an issue in games that aren't won on pure talent superiority. There's the baserunning mistakes, the defensive blunders, but also not knowing...

Baseball Game Thread for Wednesday 26 of July

Through June and most of July, we found out what it looks like when the whole team is clicking. Now, we see regression to the mean. Frustrating, but no big deal overall.

    7/18 GDT: DBacks at Braves

Olson‘s defense since coming to Atlanta hasn‘t lived up to its reputation from Oakland. Last season, the metrics were better than the visuals IMO, but this year, both are in tune. He‘s not a butcher, but also not an elite defender.

    7/18 GDT: DBacks at Braves

Some BABIP luck, and some is regression to his normal level of ability. Defense needs to be on point for him, which it was not.

7.15.23 GDT - White Sox at Braves

Just checked into this one. Why the eff are we starting Allard in the 3rd game after the ASB? Elder already has 6 days of rest, no? What about Soroka?

    Immaculate Team?

I'd pass on Ohtani, for the same reasons you mentioned. Plus, his overall game is so energy-consuming that he's going to feel it at some point. What he's able to do right now without missing a beat on either side of the ball is wild. But it is not a recipe for longevity. There's a reason...

    GDT: Braves @ Guardians 07/05

The Fish taking a playoff spot from a better team would be great for the Braves, no?

The Braves have no magic powers. They seem to be better than most teams at developing young talent into legitimate big leaguers, but they have also whiffed on many of them over the years, especially pitchers (Newk, Touki, Folty, Bryce Wilson, etc). My point was that prospects can turn out...

    All star game

It would have been nice to give our (literally) everyday players a few days off. But I'm just really glad none of our guys participates in the HR derby. That's gotta be 2 weeks' worth of high-effort swings for someone going far in that event.

I think you are just wrong here. I think most teams have given up impact guys in trades. You are right that most prospects do not work out. That is why people usually trade for multiple. But there are a lot of prospects that do turn out. Not all of them are studs. I think the industry...

GDT 7/3/23: Braves @ Guardians - The NL All-Stars take the field

Would have been interesting to read about what they eat. Is it just pasta and burger, or do they actually encourage healthy eating habits?

What Ohtani is doing is obviously insane, but I can't imagine that he's not going to run out of steam at some point. On top of logging 95IP as a starting pitcher, he is also 7th in baseball in offensive PA. He's played every game. And he's a big boy who consumes a lot of energy. Interestingly...

GDT 7/1/23: Braves vs Marlins - Afternoon Fish Tacos from Cy's Mom

This offense has got to be in the pitchers heads. It must really stress them knowing that there’s no place to get outs. They’re basically facing an All-star lineup in real games.

GDT 7/1/23: Braves vs Marlins - Afternoon Fish Tacos from Cy's Mom

This **** is crazy. Thought for sure they would come out a little exhausted after yesterday’s onslaught. But they just continue pounding everything.

Game Thread - Taking it in Stride

His WAR is only 0.3 though - his terrible defense offsets most of his adequate offense. He's far from the desaster he was last year, but also far from a good player. (I'm a bit surprised his WAR is that low. I guess a .831 OPS isn't that special for a LF)

    GDT: Braves @ A's 05/30

Couple weeks ago it was Canada and the inconvenient ballpark in Toronto. Now it's a flight to California. Next, it's going to be the heat in Phoenix that messes them up. This has got to be the least resilient team in the league. One-third of the season over, and the picture is getting clearer...

GDT 5-20: The Outlaw and the lucky yellow patch streak rolls on…

Bullpen is just bad. Not a single shutdown guy in there.
