08/22/23 GDT: Mets @ Braves WTF is wrong with this place?

Aguilar Is hitting in AAA. Against LHP, ozuna in LF, aguilar at 1b, and Olson at DH

Even in Sept when they can bring up one additional pitcher and one additional hitter, I doubt they waste that on a platoon 1B who would only play when the team faces a LHP, which has been extremely rare.

Twit needs to start getting guys days off. I also am starting to sense the staggered playing time is hurting Murph more than the rest is helping him. I think the team needs to commit to Murph playing 75% the rest of the way.. I like getting guys days off, but every other day is a bit much for a catcher you just locked up as your primary backstop. Since the Break, Murph is hitting below .200 with a very low .600 OPS... I don't think he can 'figure' it out when he is off every other night.

Ozuna figured it out while doing basically the same thing earlier in the season.

what the heck are you talking about..

1. every player is different
2. Ozuna played in 55 of the 60 games from May 2nd to July 9th (break) One game was because he got benched for not running.. he missed another after being hit in hand.. then missed 3 games in a row around the time he plead no contest.. so that might have some correlation. Prior to May 2nd he was hitting .085... He didn't figure it our until he started playing everyday. May 2nd to July 9th (.290 avg with a .903 OPS)

Contrast that to Murph

since the break he has had at least 1 AB in 61% of the games and is hitting .160 with ops of .609
first half he played in 75% of the games (1 AB at least) and he hit .306 with .999 ops.

Maybe there is a correlation.. maybe not.. maybe he is just in a funk... but I still think playing your catcher you just signed to a big extention only 60% of the time is a bad call..

I get hot summers and rest, but maybe too much rest is not a good thing.

Maybe Murphy is just a streaky hitter?

Here are his first half/second half WRC+ half splits

2022: 108/140
2021: 108/87
2020: 116/150

Fact is he's a career 122 WRC+ guy and we should expect something in that range going forward.

He could be.. Just wondering about a player and his timing when you are playing every other day. He is not a slap hitter just making contact type of player. He doesn't cheat his swing.. and if something is off, can it get fixed as quickly when you are sitting the very next night??? I don't know..

But he was paid to be the primary cather, I don't get how AA isn't jumping Twit's arse for playing him a little over half the games. Seems like a poor investment imo...

I've been singing this tune for a while. I think its absolutely disruptive to go from an everyday player to a part-time player. Getting Murphy rest should mean playing him 7 out of every 10 games. We've largely entered into them playing every other day. There is giving someone rest and then there is just going above and beyond that. But I won't belabor it because I've already seen everyone seems to be of the view that them playing every other game is fine.

Frankly if I was in his shoes as a competitor, I'd actually be extremely frustrated. Sure you can sell me on being rested for the playoffs, extending career, etc. At the end of the day, he is 28, in his prime, having a career year and has been relegated to a platoon player. There is no framing that would leave me happy with that - and baseball is absolutely a mental game. You go from thinking your becoming a star, to having your first slump, get benched more significantly and then moved down in the line-up. Only human nature after that to start pressing, you know if you don't bust out of a slump "today" then your off tomorrow, etc. I don't think its far-reached to say that cycle can absolutely compound and impact a player

Might wanna check that again chief. He missed about a start or 2 per week until Mid-May.

Now remember, I said from May 2nd on he was basically everyday.. that is when he started to heat up based on the numbers I provided. So lets check this together.

Not sure when mid may begins and ends with you, but that is 3 games he missed in that span and like I said in my OP, he entered his plea of no contest on the 9th, so he might have stayed back in ATL before catching up with the team in Toronto. So again, he started playing every day and from May 2nd on and he was a different hitter. Does that mean him playing everyday is the reason he became good all of sudden.. I don't know.. but the numbers COULD draw that conclusion if you wanted them to.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’m pretty sure he’s gonna be lock down awesome.
They took their time with this and I’ve got a pretty strong hunch that AA has been very attuned to the medicals with this one.

We shall see- but I fully expect Kyle to be a starter - and an elite one at that - come October.

you think.. it will take a 3 weeks just to get him to a reasonable pitch count and that will be in lower levels. He might get 2-3 starts in the bigs before playoffs begin.

Yeah - maybe two big league starts and then let’s go to war - thing is, he knows how to win in October.
😎

I mean, if it is unknown Wright and Cheerios for game 4.. the right call is to write Wright as the starter.

If it is Wright’s great grandfather in his Gettysburg battle uniform or Cheerios, the correct call is Wright.

:)

The other options are Elder, AJSS, Soroka, Winans and a bullpen game with Soroka going an inning or three.

None of those are terrible options actually.

He missed 3 games the first 2.5 weeks of May. Pretty sure that is the very definition of missing "a start or 2 per week."
