2015 June Draft Results Thread

I'm not really talking about their individual talent. I'm talking about their philosophy. I like their philosophy because it makes sense and is smart. Taking pitching simply because we've had good pitching in the past isn't really smart.

If Kris Bryant or Kyle Schwarber were there for us, we'd take them. Those guys weren't available to us. You can't base your plan off what happens to other teams. So, they got high picks and spent money. We can't really do that. They also had to suffer through some really, really bad seasons.

The Cubs also need pitching.

again on the second pick....nobody knows anything about how these guys are going to turn out. AND they may have a deal in place to sign the guy for 1.5 million instead of 1.9 so they can go over slot on someone else.

So, where are we going to go over slot? That's 2 picks in a row now that are pretty big reaches. If we can get legitimate talent later in the draft, awesome. But right now, these extra picks have just led to us getting actually lesser talent.

The data I looked at from the last 20 drafts suggests that in this part of the draft we've done relatively well with high school hitters. So in that regard at least, the pick of Austin Riley as a third baseman is grounded upon some past success. We've also done well with college pitchers in this part of the draft.

Betts still out there.

It's better talent than the Braves currently have at the lower levels.

This is a really silly thing to say considering how many stud hitters we (and every other team) pass on every year

lol dude, once again you totally miss the point.
Kris Bryant was a huge prospect. The fact that he even fell to #2 baffles me. He's a huge reason their future is so bright. I don't even think the Cubs thought Schwarber would be this good this soon, but that's not the point.
I 100% believe if a prospect of that caliber fell to us at #14, pitcher or hitter, we'd take them. Schwarber or Bryant. I severely doubt we'd pass on them if a prospect that good was there. But the hitters that were there weren't near either of them. And if they were, we probably couldn't afford them. It's not nearly as clear-cut as you make it.
And they signed Soler. We all wish we could do that.
Three huge reasons they're in good shape for the future. That's not the FO being amazing, it's using common sense and money.
Not to say they haven't made some very smart moves, but so have we. And they just committed big money to Lester.

I have no idea. I'm just saying wait and see when the draft is over.

Maybe they just think these guys are best players available. I'm not pretending to know the answer.

If we pick a college RP they could be in the big leagues Friday....

I don't care about that. Our choice right now is not talent we can draft vs. the talent we already have. It's the talent we can draft vs. the other talent we can draft. We have clearly gotten guys at 28 and 41 that are not as talented as their draft slot indicates. We better make up for that later on. That's what I'm saying.

And we have Albies, Davidson, and Peterson all at the lower levels right now.

I don't understand why you keep trying to make the case that the Braves are barren with talent at the lower levels right now. They're not.

Cubs get Dewees. They've clearly had a strategy of going after hitters in recent years. Makes sense in an era when pitching is more plentiful than other periods (ie expansion eras).
